Released 10/15/1985, Challenger for Famicom is an enhanced port by Hudson Soft of 1983's Stop the Express for ZX Spectrum. In the first level, the only one found in the original, an archaeologist called Challenger tries to rescue princess Maria who is held captive on a train by the evil Don Waldorado. The next stages alternate between an overhead and horizontal perspective, almost like mixing Zelda I and Zelda II, and you must find hidden secrets to unlock the path forward. Unlike some action adventure games, the stages loop and increase in difficulty like a traditional arcade game.

I think Challenger had some original and impressive ideas for the time, like a 100 screen map, but it hasn't held up well. I can see why it never made it to the NES. This is not to mention the fact that the Challenger space shuttle explosion occurred two months after the game's release and would have made the title problematic in the United States. The varied gameplay does not make up for the clunky controls. The Schubert music is cool, and the train sequence looks fantastic, but the rest of the game seems unpolished. However, I am sure this influenced other games on the Famicom system in terms of how it varied gameplay, so for that I commend it.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi Score. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
