Released 11/21/1985, Mach Rider for Famicom is a motorcycle fighting game developed by HAL Laboratory. Essentially an expansion of F-1 Race's raster scrolling code, you have no brake and must rely on downshifting to slow down or get to fourth gear to reach Mach 1 speed, the speed of sound, roughly one kilometer per three seconds.

Mach Rider would go on to influence classic vehicular combat games like Road Rash for Sega Genesis. Mach Rider would see a release on the VS System in the same month as the Famicom version, as well as on the NES nine months later. In the VS System version we learn that Mach Rider is a scantily clad woman under her badass riding gear! Nintendo had a cool toy in 1972 called Mach Rider, so similar to other NES classics like Wild Gunman, the title pays homage to early Nintendo history.

The year is 2112 (a Rush album allusion?) and you are Mach Rider, saving the planet's survivors from evil invading "forces" on three-wheelers. This was basically the default storyline at the time for many games that involved shooting humanoid figures, it goes over better with parents. The enemy characters are called "invaders" implying aliens. But, the decision to call them this must have been made after the game was developed--they look like humans! It seems the game was originally designed for a post-apocalyptic dystopian world with radioactive fallout from a nuclear holocaust guiding your way. This would have made a way better story. They also missed out on adding a loud effect for breaking the sound barrier!

Endurance Mode and Solo mode use a timer instead of lives, and there are 37 different course parts to choose from when constructing your own tracks in Design Mode. This latter feature would sadly only work for the Japanese players who had access to a Famicom Data Recorder. However, clever folks have come up with a workaround to use this feature on the NES, which you can see at the link below.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi Score on Fighting Mode. I played on an original NES using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
