Gretchen is a legitimately nasty boss. The boss basically takes the theme of this chapter (enemies that can inflict Fear and Depression) and combines it with the Loreley boss from Chapter 4. The boss can become straight up unbeatable if he inflicts Depression on all your healers and you don't have enough Repair Kits to survive the fight.

One of the most important things you can do in this fight is to limit the number of Depressed characters. The Gretchen will inevitably use its charge attack to inflict Depression, but you don't have to have a fully depressed party. My tip would be to choose three characters you don't intend to use in the Front and make sure to swap them in every time the Gretchen is about to use its signature attack so that you only have three Depressed characters. You will also want to take out the Gretchen goon's too (though you'll want to kill them anyway, since the Gretchen can actually self-heal if you leave them alive).

Once you know how to limit the effect's of the bosses Depression inducing attacks, it's very important to take the offensive in this fight. Even if the Gretchen didn't have its self-healing and Depression inflicting moves, it still has an insane amount of HP. There are several AOE characters you can make use of for when the Gretchen's goons are alive (namely, Jin, Socks, Wappa and Boron). When it's just the Gretchen, Hack has the very cheap and very useful Burning Trigger. If you like a little RNG, it's also possible to bring in Chick and Socks for a Stun strat. Otherwise, play it safe and have two Heavy Cannons and one Machine Gun. If you've been using Sheena a lot (with Chick), Sheena can be a good pick for the Machine Gun.

If you want a high risk, high reward strategy, you can purposefully take a lot of damage and then bring in Malt (since he has Brave Shot, a skill that gets more powerful the lower the Taranis' HP is). If you're going to do it like this, it's very important you keep Malt in the support role or in the back entirely (you do NOT want him to get Depressed if you plan to use Brave Shot).

So long as you play smart and be proactive (rather than overly defensive) you can get through this fight mostly unscathed.
