Chavez II Game Sample - SNES/SFC
Original Air Date: July 30th, 2009
We also have one or both Chavez games for the Sega Genesis, but the SNES Chavez games are a bit more interesting given their circumstances. They were released later for the SNES and are supposedly harder to find. I bought Chavez II a few months ago for a buck and it turns out it's one of the rarest games ever released for the SNES due to Chavez's popularity having been diminished somewhat since the first Chavez game (due to his first loss to Frankie Randall in January 1994) and due to the game being rumored to have only been released in South America... so how I found it is beyond me. I'm still quite the skeptic though... since the game is readily available in "fair" quantities on sites like eBay.
I've said "Chavez" a good half dozen times now, but who exactly is he, and what's this game all about? This game is centered around Julio César Chávez, a Mexican six-time world champion boxer in three weight divisions. His career spanned over twenty-five years and in his prime, he was considered the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world and one of the greatest in the history of boxing. He was born July 12, 1962 in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. Of course I pulled most of this information from Wikipedia, but even I have heard of his amazing skills.
Well, like most great boxers, Chavez got the "royal" treatment; Sponsorships, legions of fans, money, and a few video games made in his honor. Most people don't know about his video games, but they're actually some of the better early boxing games. This game in particular however is good for another reason... it's a retooled "Boxing Legends of the Ring" with a few tweaks and changes to the characters and with Spanish dialogue. It's almost like a rom hack that got picked up and released on the market.
Regardless, it's a pretty decent game with very large characters, okay animation all things considered, and decent sound effects, although there are very limited grunts and moans. You have your standard options, an Exhibition Mode, and a Career Mode (which lets you build your character through fights). This version of Chavez II was made much later than the Genesis game. Enjoy.
Oh, and it's nice to see real advertisements for some reason like "Pepsi" and "Pizza Hut", and not "Pepse" and "Pizza Shack".
