Chrono Trigger - Ch. 23 - The New King
CHAPTER 23 - THE NEW KING
So following the events of the last chapter: the Ocean Palace and the Kingdom of Zeal have been destroyed. The survivors, along with the Earthbound ones have formed a new village where there is now no differentiation between the two tribes. Suddenly however, Dalton has appeared and declares the authority of the new Kingdom of Dalton. After a very cheap move, you wake up in a cell with all your belongings now missing.
After a quick exploration, you'll soon realize that you're now on the Blackbird, Dalton's airship. Everyone's equipment has been stolen, so currently only Ayla is capable of fighting. The Blackbird is not huge. The inside is divided into just two sections: the top-half and bottom-half. You can either leave through the door of your holding cell, or escape through the vents. In order to get everything back, you'll have to use a combination of both methods.
If you head all the way to the bottom-half, Robo's equipment will be in the lower-left room. I recommend that you take the vents all the way down to this room. In the vents, you should stumble upon a quick scene where Dalton is modifying the Epoch. Now that you have Robo's gear, you'll want to head back to the area you originally started in (the middle-right side of the bottom-half). In the room above you're starting point, you'll find Frog's gear. You can only enter through the door, so you can't use the vents for this. You'll have to fight a couple guards and one of those floating drone things, but they're not too tough.
Afterwards, in the room to the left of your starting point, you'll find the group's stolen money. This is probably the least important, but there's no reason to leave this behind anyway. Now we're ready to head north, to the top-half of the Blackbird. Starting from the entrance, you'll want to explore this room in a counter-clockwise motion, starting with the lower-right section and looping around to finish in the lower-left. You'll notice the room in the top-left hand side has no doors. You'll need to enter the room to the right and then use the vents to enter the door-less room. Here, you'll find Ayla's gear. Maybe you forgot that Ayla was gear-less since she can fight with her bare hands, but make sure to grab this too.
Now, finally we'll enter the lower-left room. Here is the last treasure containing the party's stolen inventory. This not only counts items, but also gear that wasn't equipped at the time of kidnapping. So you definitely don't want to leave this behind! In this same room, you'll notice a ladder. It doesn't lead to the vents, but rather the wing of the Blackbird itself. Here you'll find an interesting monster that disables your tech and items. It also zaps you of all accuracy. If you fail to kill them after a few turns, they'll self-destruct. If you beat them, you can score some nice EXP and tech points.
If you walk out to the edge of the wing, you'll trigger the boss fight against the Golem Overlord. This guy is a total joke compared to his predecessors. It will count down throughout the fight, but it won't do anything when the count reaches zero.
Golem Overlord - 15,000 HP
Even though it's not necessary, I hit Golem Overlord with my hardest stuff to just end the fight quickly. The Dual Tech, 'Bubble Burst' worked well for me here. When Golem Overlord dies, you'll head straight into another boss fight against Dalton. This fight is also ridiculously easy.
Dalton - 2,800 HP
Hit Dalton with a few strong moves and the fight should be over in a turn or two. He still does that 'Iron Orb' moves, which cuts your HP in half. But honestly, you should be able to take him out before you need to heal. Afterwards, you'll regain your Epoch with it's new added upgrades of flight.
Back in the new town, you can buy new gear from the Nu who gets new gear periodically. The people in town will also tell you that Magus is at North Cape. When you get there, he'll give some much needed exposition on his past and reveal that he is actually Janus. He'll give you the option to fight him. This is very important: if you choose to fight him, he will die at the conclusion of the battle.
If you choose not to fight him, he will join you. This is the recommended option if you're not playing a 'New Game+'. If you choose to fight him and Frog is in your party, he will ask to take him on alone. Either way, Magus will explain that it's possible for Crono's death to be undone and points you in the direction of the next chapter.
