Chrono Trigger - Ch. 25 - The Fated Hour (Part 1 - Ayla, Lucca & Frog)
CHAPTER 25 - THE FATED HOUR (PART 1 - AYLA, LUCCA & FROG)
The Fated Hour is the penultimate chapter of the game, followed by the final chapter, entitled 'The Final Battle'. Everything in this chapter is technically optional. After you've revived Crono and return to the End of Time, speaking to Gaspar will explain all the options that are before you.
Each character gets a special side-quest aimed at tying up the loose ends of their story, as well as acquiring their ultimate weapon and/or armor.
AYLA'S SIDE-QUEST:
Poor neglected Ayla... This side-quest is included more so for the sake of completion, rather than any story-line related to Ayla. If you speak to Ayla in the End of Time, she'll mention that her village has a very strong defensive item. So let's bring her along and take one last trip to 65M BC!
First, let's head to the ruins of Laruba Village. You'll find a Nu there that offers to change your character's name. They will also give you the 'Silver Rock'. This accessory will unlock the Triple Tech, 'Spin Strike' which is used by Ayla, Frog and Robo. You can do this at any point after beating Giga Gaia in 12,000 BC.
Now head to the trading hut and speak to the chief here. You'll need to trade 10 Fang, Feather, Horn and Petal for the 'Ruby Armor', which absorbs more fire damage than the Ruby Vest they had available earlier. Pick up as many as you'd like, then head back to the End of Time.
LUCCA'S QUEST:
"And there's a very special stone that can shine its light on each generation, from the distant past to the far future..."
Speak to Lucca at the End of Time and she'll mention using solar energy to fight Lavos. It will quickly cut to an island in 2300 AD. Head there and fly to the island located in the South-west. This is the Sun Palace, where you'll immediately get into a boss fight against 'Son of Sun'.
This is a fairly gimmicky fight. You'll only want to attack the flames surrounding the eye of Son of Sun since it will counter-attack with Flare if you try to hit the center. The individual flames will also counter-attack with fire if you hit the wrong one. If you hit the right flame the game will make a "ding" sound and then it will deal damage to the center sphere. Keep attacking the same flame until it shuffles, then try to relocate the right flame again. Techs do not work on the flames, so only use regular attacks.
After hitting the correct flame enough times, the Sun will lose its flames and retreat. Follow it to watch it become the 'Moon Stone'. There is an island in the northwest corner which contains the Sun Shrine, a place where it's always sunny. Travel back to 65M BC and place the Moon Stone there. Head back to 2300 AD and you'll discover the Moon Stone is missing. If Magus is in the lead, he'll comment that it appears to have been missing for 1300 years.
Head to 1000 AD and you should see the stone shimmering as you fly by Porre. The mayor is selfish and does not want to give it to you. Travel back to 600 AD, buy the spiced jerky from the Snail Stop and give to the Mayor's ancestor for free. She'll vow to raise her kids to be generous. Head back to 1000 AD and the mayor will now give you the Moon Stone for free. Return it to the Sun Shrine in 1000 AD and then travel back to 2300 AD.
Now the Moon Stone will be fully recharged into the Sun Stone. Lucca will decide to take it home and make something with it. She makes the 'Wondershot', her strongest weapon. While Taban will use the leftovers to make the 'Sunglasses' accessory. Speak to him again and he'll give her the 'Taban Suit', if you haven't picked it up already.
FROG'S SIDE-QUEST:
"There's the ghost of a lofty knight, slain by Magus in the Middle Ages, who haunts the present..."
Speak to Frog and he'll comment on what Gaspar said while it cuts to an area in 600 AD we haven't visited yet. But first, head there in 1000 AD. This area is called the 'Northern Ruins' and it's located on the only continent you haven't visited yet, near the town of Choras. When you enter the castle, a ghost knight will attack you. Your attacks will miss and the battle will end in two turns. The ghost is Cyrus, who seems to recognize Frog/Glenn.
Head to town and ask around. Make sure to speak to the carpenter at the tavern who likes to drink. Now head to 600 AD. The carpenter in this time period had his tools stolen and can't get to work on repairing the castle. Head back to 1000 AD and ask the lazy, drunk carpenter to borrow his tools. Now back in 600 AD, this carpenter can get to work. You have to clear out the monsters before his crew can go in. Then he'll repair a little more. This cycle repeats a few times before you're done.
Eventually you'll have access to the whole castle. Frog will reconcile things with Cyrus and receive an upgraded Masamune. Please note, do not open any chests or sealed chests in 600 AD. Open them first in 1000 AD and you'll receive upgraded items, including Marle's ultimate weapon, 'Valkyrie Bow'.
