CHAPTER 22 - LAVOS BECKONS

As mentioned before, this is your last chance to do things in Zeal, so buy whatever weapons or complete whatever quests you need to here before moving on. In the last chapter, we fought Dalton in the throne room of Zeal Palace. A Gate appeared, but it was really just an elevator to take us down into the Ocean Palace. This is a big chapter, in terms of the story, at least. But it can also be a challenging area if you're unprepared.

You'll run into Masa/Mune as you head into the Ocean Palace (leave the first room to the south) and then witness a brief cutscene concerning the Mammon Machine. The next area has one main room with several rooms that branch off from it. You'll want to take your time and make sure to explore each one. Eventually, you'll find a new weapon for everyone, except for Ayla, of course. You'll actually end up with two new swords for Frog. Additionally you'll also find an armor and helmet set of Aeon gear. Be kind and give it to Ayla, if she's in your party.

Please note that the 'Scouts' (the flying cyclopes) absorb all magic except for their color (element). If they are hit with magic not of their color, they will counter with a party damaging spell of their element (i.e. Water 2).

There are two long areas: a staircase and an elevator, where you'll face a long string of battles. So make sure to keep your HP up. This is a good area to level-up, if you need it. I was able to catch Marle and Lucca up a bit and get their Ice 2/Fire 2 moves. The staircase is the only area where you won't fight Scouts, so I switched my party up here and put in Frog and Ayla. This it the party I use for the upcoming boss fight against the Golem Twins. Crono learns Luminaire at some point in this video, so between that and the Dual Tech 'Slurp Kiss', the boss fight is a breeze.

Golem Twins - 7,000HP (each Golem)

Make sure to check everyone's gear. Crono had the Silver Stud, but it's probably better to give him the Gold Stud here. Luminaire does over 1,000 HP damage to both golems, so seven rounds of this is the easy way to get through this fight. Meanwhile, you can have Frog and Ayla use Slurp Kiss each turn to keep your HP up. It's really a breeze, but the right party makes all the difference. I was unable to pull this off with just Crono, Lucca and Marle; even though they gained some good levels here.

Anyway, when its HP reaches zero, both will counter with a move that does about 100-ish damage to everybody. So be prepared for that.

After the fight, you'll mainly just have to watch the story unfold. You reach the Mammon Machine, which is currently set to its limit and overwhelming Schala with Lavos' dark energy. Using the Ruby Knife, you attempt to destroy the machine. Masa & Mune fuse with the Ruby Knife, creating the Masamune. However it is not enough to stop the device and Lavos is awakened. You'll fight Lavos, but unless you're exceptionally leveled-up, you'll most likely die from Lavos' first attack. It's okay.

Magus is revealed to be the Prophet and attempts to defeat Lavos, however his attacks and magic have no effect. Crono attempts one last-ditch effort to protect his party and ends up dying at the hands of Lavos! This one certainly got me when I was a kid, playing this for the first time. Schala uses the last of her pendant's power to teleport Crono's party to safety, while pleading that they do not hate or blame her mother.

The Ocean Palace appears to be imploding in the aftermath of the confrontation with Lavos, as the parasite rises to the surface and unleashes its hellfire onto the world. The destruction of the Ocean Palace also causes massive environmental damage, changing the landscape of the world. Your party awakens in a small camp. It is comprised of survivors from the kingdom of Zeal, as well as the Earthbound Village. The survivors of Zeal can no longer use magic.

As you speak to everyone and head to the Commons to speak with the village elder, Dalton will show up again. Now that Zeal is no more, he wants to claim the new world as the Kingdom of Dalton. In a very lame, "Look over there!" trick, Dalton will knock you out. When you wake up, your equipment, money and items will have been stolen!
