Playstation 1 is truly the 'Wild West' of video game systems. In the early days of 3D, it seemed like every developer tried to throw their hat into the massively popular PS1 ring and produced some of the most random, odd games of all-time. Recently, we sat down with a stack of PS1 games we never heard of, and the results are... unsurprising.

Gekioh: Shooting King was released on December 17, 2002 for the PS1, making this an -extremely- late release for a game that's actually good on the PS1. Gekioh was originally called Shienryū in Japan, and came out in 1997 for both the arcade and Saturn in Japan, then for the PS1 in 1999 in Japan --- this was a very late translation/overseas port. It was published by Natsume.

Gekioh was developed by Warashi, a small Japanese company that made mostly Mahjong and shooter game, although they did release a Dreamcast game as late as 2007, so that's pretty cool.

Anyway, this game is really fun - it's not too easy, not too hard, the weapons you get are fun, the levels are the right length, and the fact that you can add credits at will to a game that was ported from the arcade is simply awesome. As we mentioned, purists may scoff at this, but you don't -have- to use the extra credits. I can't tell you how many arcade ports I would have beaten if they just gave you this option --- even something like the House of the Dead series would be great to have this as an -option-. Anyway, this one is a bit expensive, but I definitely recommend playing this any way you can - thanks for watching!
