Control: Part 02
The hooks are digging in. Cleansing my first Object of Power gave me my first "paranatural" ability, telekinesis. The terminology in the game is interesting, they went with paranatural rather than paranormal. I'm unsure why the change, though it's likely in one of the letters or memos I've come across. Honestly, what is "normal" in the context of the Oldest House?
I still think the game is over-dramatized, but I'm settling in, and it's feeling more natural than it did during my first play session. I came across a creepy puppet show called Threshold Kids. I don't understand where it's going or who produced it, but it has something to do with the Federal Bureau of Control. I want to be on the hunt for more episodes because of how creepy it is.
I do wish there were difficulty settings. I like playing on Easy. Again, I know that doesn't make me a "real" gamer. That's fine, I don't want to be a "gamer" anyway. I assume this game has a dynamic system that determines difficulty based on your overall skill. If so, not a fan. However, this isn't my artistic expression and if Remedy has made the decision they don't need a difficulty setting, I'll just have to live with it. With that said, the game, so far, hasn't been difficult.
The best part of the game has to be the incidentals, all the little extra letters and memos. In the Dead Letters section, there were a bunch of them. I do like collectibles and I think I want to go around and find everything lying around. These letters and memos flesh the world and motivations of the FBC out more.
Control is fun and I do look forward to exploring the Oldest House further. I hope, and expect, things get weirder as the game progresses. From a top-level story perspective, I don't quite understand exactly what's going on. I have heard that the story isn't the most interesting thing about the game, it's the letters and memos you pick up along the way. Because the game is so weird, I would have appreciated details and breadcrumbs that would bleed into the real world. I seem to remember there was a PC game a while back that did a transmedia style marketing that brought the story out beyond the game. We kind of saw it with Death Stranding and Enter the Matrix, but I would have liked it to be more subtle than that. Possibly something included in one of the videos or memos. Maybe in the sequel? We'll have to see.
