The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Part 01
This may be the third time I've started The Witcher 3. The second time I played this long. If I remember correctly, I ended up getting stuck somewhere where there were spiders; because of the autosave it continuously spawned me back in the same area. It was death on repeat. On rumination, there may have been some way of getting out, but at the time, and it is my first Witcher game, I just gave up and swore I would eventually get back. It's been years.
Like many, I am revisiting this game due to the Netflix series. On a side note, I also am in the middle of reading the books as well. I have to admit, I'm not loving the books. I've read The Last Wish and in the middle of Sword of Destiny. Reading them is great if you want better context for the show, but in terms of the value they add to the game, there isn't much. There are some little details that the books cover, but as a whole, they haven't added greatly to the experience. However, playing at least Witcher 2 would have been beneficial.
Near the end of this first play session, there were a series of questions that were asked of me as I was getting shaved. I'd like to believe that those would have been automatically answered if I had a Witcher 2 save file. Since I didn't, and never played the previous game, I needed to look-up what the potential answers meant and the choice I would have made in The Witcher 2. If I ever go back and play The Witcher 2 I'll have to remember what I chose in The Witcher 3 so the timeline can remain intact.
I have tried, on multiple occasions, to play the first Witcher game. It's a rough experience and doesn't hold up well. I suppose it would if you are already completely invested in the world and lore, but woof, that game.
Wild Hunt is scratching an itch. I'm glad I restarted it and I'm looking forward to seeing how long I can stick with it. Open-world games can get daunting, but it does help that everything is fully voiced, the characters look nice and the world feels alive. That's what I look for in a game like this, the world needs to feel alive. There are people walking down the paths. The trees sway in the wind, the water is choppy. I can swim. Give me a playground and let me explore and make sure there is something for me to do. Let me get lost, but don't allow me to get into situations where it's difficult for me to escape. That last point may be a troublesome one, since I have already experienced it.
Regardless, I'm having fun and it's beginning to get it's hooks into me.
