Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex - Finale: Elementary, My Dear Bandicoot
In today's episode of the "Wrath of Cortex" playthrough, we complete the game's last regular level and defeat Crunch once again in the final boss fight.
For the last regular level in the game, "Cortex Vortex", like with the fifth stages in the other four hubs, we're making our way through a lab. However, this time around, things are much more difficult since the level not only starts off with you going against the camera, but there are plenty of lasers, electric floors, and projectile enemies to keep you on your toes.
Though I have to say, this is one of the game's more solid levels since it has a really nice aesthetic, what with it being a space station laboratory full of cool colors that are calming to the eye, the perfect amount of difficulty for a final level, and a small section where you get to go ham with Aku Aku's invincibility.
Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the final boss, which as you can probably guess entails us fighting Crunch. However, this time, instead of fighting us himself, Crunch is pressing buttons to have the Elementals attack us for him. That's right; here Cortex is boasting at the start of the game that Crunch is a, and I quote, "genetically advanced superweapon of unbelievable strength", yet when he's at full power, instead of him turning into a force of nature and going full Avatar on our asses with his mastery over the four elements, he comes at swinging with a 1 Vs. 3 minigame from the "Mario Party" series.
As for the fight itself, all you need to do is dodge the Elementals' attacks and then quickly blast Crunch with the fruit bazooka when he gets tired, with each phase adding a new Elemental- starting with Rok-Ko, then Wa-Wa, then Py-Ro, and then finally Lo-Lo. From there, simply spin into Cortex. For the Elementals' attacks, Rok-Ko and Wa-Wa will rain projectiles down from above, Py-Ro will cause fire to erupt from certain spots in the floor, and Lo-Lo will cause beams of electricity to generate along the ground.
Out of the four elementals, I find Lo-Lo to be the hardest to deal with since the electricity appears pretty quickly and the hitbox on the beams can be a bit wonky. Plus, it doesn't help that like in "Warped", you can't use Aku Aku during the battle, so you have to win without taking a single hit. On the other hand, Py-Ro's the easiest Elemental to deal with since you're given plenty of warning regarding where the fire will erupt and its hitbox is quite generous. Thankfully, the attack pattern is always the same, so even if this fight's giving you a run for your money, you'll eventually win if you keep at it and commit the pattern to memory.
