Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex - Episode 4: From Boss to Toss
In today's episode of the "Wrath of Cortex" playthrough, we defeat Crunch and Wa-Wa, win a race with the slipperiest dune buggy to ever exist, and complete an Atlas Sphere level that showcases the bosses from "Warped" at their lowest.
After reconfiguring a few of the rom's settings, the game freezing issue has been fixed and we're able to take down Crunch and Wa-Wa, which rewards us with the double-jump ability; and just like with the ice physics, this game improved the double-jump from "Warped" by allowing you to use it at any point during a jump and not just at the max height.
As for the levels that we're tackling in today's video, first we have "Smokey and the Bandicoot", a stage where we have to race the bosses from "Warped" in a dune buggy, which is one of the easiest stages in the game to beat, but can be a pain to get all of the crates for. You see, the dune buggy that we're driving is more than capable of outspeeding the racers. Heck, at max speed, the dune buggy's even capable of driving over the gaps in the road with no issue. However, while it's a lot of fun blasting through the level at max speed in order to obtain the Power Crystal, getting the box gem's an absolute drag because you need to drive at a snail's pace in order to avoid missing any of them since you can't turn the buggy around and it has practically no traction. So even if you're just inching down the road, you can potentially slide past a crate- especially after using a speed pad- resulting in you having to redo the level.
Thankfully, the next stage that we're tackling, "Eskimo Roll", is much more fast-paced when it comes to the boxes. In this level, we're once again rolling around in the Atlas Sphere, only this time, in addition to the presence of more pits that we can potentially fall into, the bosses from "Warped" serve as enemies, which I found to be so cool back in the day. Sure, the "Warped" bosses also serve as the enemies in the vehicle levels, but unlike those levels, in which they just feel like reskins of a generic enemy, this time, they're in the field trying to stop you with their respective abilities.
However, for me, that feeling of amazement quickly turned to disappointment upon realizing that the bosses from "Warped", despite having so much potential and character, have been reduced to the role of a windmill on a putt-putt course- an obstacle that you simply time and move past with little difficulty. Seriously, N. Tropy and Dingodile, despite the former being a genius and a master of time and the latter being incredibly skilled with his flamethrower, just stand still and fire projectiles in a single spot like sentient sprinklers. Granted, in a couple of situations, Dingodile can be a bit threatening since his fire covers a decent range, but as for N. Tropy, his projectile's not only slow, but it has zero coverage. But as pitiful as N. Tropy and Dingodile are, at least they're not Tiny, who's unable to hurt you as he tries to simply block your path with his body like a sad goalie.
Maybe that's why N. Gin's the only boss not present in these levels: he felt that they were beneath him and threatened to quit if he had to partake in them, resulting in Cortex giving in either out of respect or fear that N. Gin would go N. Brio on him.
