Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex - Episode 2: Only Rock will Break Rock
In today's episode of the "Wrath of Cortex" playthrough, we complete the final level in the first hub, defeat Crunch in the first boss fight, and complete two of the levels in the second hub.
For the fifth and final level of the first hub, "Compactor Reactor", it's arguably one of the easiest stages in the game because the section after the initial minecart portion is so spacious. In fact, the corridor in that section of the level's so wide that you're actually able to run around most of the enemies, with the only real obstacles being some slow-moving drills and some flaming rocks that are moving down conveyor belts. Though speaking of flaming rocks , I hope you like them and the Atlas Sphere because that's what the first boss is.
As much as I like this game, I'll be the first to admit that the boss fights are one of its weakest factors since they all feature Crunch and most of them heavily involve vehicles. Seriously, only two of the five bosses in the game don't have a focus on a vehicle; and this first one is arguably the worst of the bunch.
In this first battle against Crunch, it's less of a battle and more of a minigame in that you have to turn all of the rocks present in the arena with the Atlas Sphere, all while dodging Crunch, who's rolling around in his own sphere that'll damage you on contact. However, what makes this fight a pain is that if Crunch hits a blue rock, it reverts back to neutral, and if he hits a neutral rock, it becomes orange and can only be become neutral if you either wait a bit, which could result in him setting you back to square one, or ram into yourself and take a bit of damage in the process. So that, when combined with the luck factor that comes with the fact that the rocks are constantly rolling around the arena, can make this boss fight either the easiest in the game or that hardest. Though upon rewatching the footage for this fight while writing this description, I just noticed that there's a mini-map in the upper-right corner of the screen that not only shows where Crunch is in relation to you, but also where the rocks are.
So with Crunch down, but far from out, we're free to move onto the second hub, starting with my least favorite level in the game: "That Sinking Feeling". Like with "Tornado Alley" from the first hub, the goal of the stage is to fly around the stage and destroy six objects while contending with the bosses from "Warped", who are trying to blast you out of the sky. However, unlike in "Tornado Alley", where we had a reliable machine gun, this time around, the only weapon at our disposal is a missile launcher that requires us to take a couple of seconds to lock onto the target before it would fire. As such, the "Warped" bosses can easily swarm you and decimate your health before you have a chance to take down even one of them. Plus, since the battleships that we're targeting are at ground-level, you have to angle the camera slightly downwards, which in turn leaves you open to an enemy aircraft ramming right into you.
Thankfully, the next level we're tackling, "Banzai Bonsai", isn't too bad since it's just a standard platforming level with Coco, with the main difference between her levels and Crash's being that hers tend to focus less on platforming and more on vehicles.
