Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex - Episode 3: We All Die in a Yellow Submarine
In today's episode of the "Wrath of Cortex" playthrough, we complete the remaining levels in the second hub and attempt to take on the second Crunch fight.
For the first level in this video, "Jungle Rumble", it's pretty straightforward- a jungle-themed level with spear-throwing poodles, a bonus area that has us utilize our new tiptoe power, and a vehicle section where we have to flee from a rampaging herd of rhinos, lest they do to Crash what they did to James' parents in "James and the Giant Peach".
Next, we have "Seashell Shenanigans", the first ocean level in the game that perfectly embodies everything that this game stands for. In terms of atmosphere, between the "Metroid Prime"-esque music and the color scheme, the game really knocks it out of the park. Unfortunately, the gameplay's a different story. You see, the issue with the water levels in this game is that they have a tendency to be very tall, meaning that you'll constantly be sweeping the stage from top to bottom as you slowly move forward out of fear that you'll miss a box or two simply because they were out of site. But the worst part about this level is the submarine, which is this game's version of the fish missile launcher from "Warped". However, unlike the latter, which was completely optional, had great controls, and even acted as a makeshift Aku Aku if you got hit, the former's the exact opposite- mandatory, has horrible turning, and a massive hitbox that makes you feel more vulnerable than when you're just playing as base Crash.
Though at least for the final level of the second hub, "H2 Oh No", you only have to deal with the sub for a small stretch before the level transitions into a sewer stage from "Crash 2", what with the main gimmick being that you need to jump from block to block to avoid the electrified water that's all over the place.
As for the boss fight for this hub, which has us battling against Crunch and Wa-Wa, at its core, it's N-Tropy's fight from "Warped"- You need to dodge projectiles, jump across platforms, and then spin into him, with the blue ones requiring you to hop over them while the green ones need to be ducked under. However, unlike with N-Tropy, where he'd leave you alone while you platformed over to him, you'll need to reach Crunch as he's attacking you, which is made harder by the fact that the platforms that you need to use will sink into the water if you stand on them for too long.
