Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex - Episode 8: A True Flop, in More Ways than One
In today's episode of the "Wrath of Cortex" playthrough, we roll around a castle, scale an active volcano, and get a secret upgrade.
For the first level we're tackling today, "Medieval Madness", we're using the Atlas Sphere to make our way through some sort of medieval setting. To be honest, I've never been able to understand what the developers were going for when creating this level. On the one hand, it feels like a fort of sorts, what with the cannons you see lying around and the open design, but the tents in the background and all of the straw give off a Renaissance fair vibe. And while on the subject of the straw, why is it consuming the tents and what's so deadly about the parts of it that are cloaked in fog? Did Cortex, in his revenge-fueled madness, create some immobile super-sized straw mutant that feeds upon all that have the misfortune of falling within it?
Then again, this is a "Crash Bandicoot" level where a wannabe goalie mutated Tasmanian tiger, dingo/crocodile hybrid with a flamethrower, and a narcissistic time lord with a weak projectile are doing everything they can to stop us, so it's probably best not to think about that sort of thing.
Though speaking of this level, here's a bit of interesting trivia for you: while the GameCube and Xbox versions of the game use the music from "The Gauntlet" for this stage, the PS2 version features an entirely different song that sounds really epic. For those of you curious, here's a link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2vRf0pHE4U
Next, we have "Crash and Burn", a level that would've been perfect for the third hub since it entails us scaling an active volcano on a tropical island. For this level, there's a no-death platform towards the end that leads to the red gem, but despite having to deal with lava and boulders, getting to the platform and making your way through the section leading to the gem is made much easier thanks to one thing: the fruit bazooka.
Seriously, the fruit bazooka is a blast, both literally and figuratively, to use because you can take out any nitro blocks you see from a safe distance. So if you take things nice and slow, you'll be fine.
Unfortunately, despite being the more tech-savvy bandicoot, Coco has zero interest in using the fruit bazooka, meaning that when we return to "Banzai Bonsai" to access the red gem platform, we'll need to do things the old-fashion way as we make our way through a gauntlet of springy awnings and nitro crates. Though for our efforts, in addition to getting another gem, we also get a secret upgrade in the form of the Super Belly Flop, which more or less just changes the animation of our slam attack.
