Retro Revival, Part #41 - Strife: Veteran Edition (2014, Steam)
Six years ago I uploaded a few videos about a mostly forgotten FPS named Strife to this channel. This might not have been the first pseudo-3D game with dialogue, adventure elements and inventory management (Ultima Underworld and System Shock says hi), but Rogue Entertainment sure took the powerful Doom engine to a whole new level by combining id Software's rock-solid combat mechanics with all sorts of cool stuff like NPC interaction, RPG-like character upgrades and even a little bit of player choice.
I remember being completely blown away by Strife's many impressive and forward-thinking features when the game came out in 1996, and today's modern re-release from the tireless retro champions over at Night Dive Studios (most famous for cutting the Gordian knot that was SS2's legal issues) is a welcome one indeed. The so-called "Veteran Edition" comes with a neat wrapper which enables high resolutions and some other bells and whistles, so now there's really no excuse not to experience the underrated FPS epic that is Strife.
