Demon's Souls SL1 NG+5 PBWT "Easy Mode" - Part 5 - 4-2: Old Hero
Welcome to Demon's Souls: For Dummies.
No skills were used in the making of this series. =)
1:45 We start out (after one total failure) by pressing a switch. It's entirely possible to pull this section off without dying, but I don't manage it here. I do still manage to retrieve my souls, however, so I'm cool with the accidental "suicide run". It's actually the easiest way to approach the switch behind the first Reaper anyway.
3:05 This is a neat little trick I learned from MajinSweet's SL1 PBWT series. Taking the Thief Ring off taunts the two silver skeletons here right off the cliff for you, trivializing this section. That's a good thing, because otherwise I found these two killed me about 3 out of every 4 runs. Otherwise you have to wait for Hyper Mode, which slows things down here too much.
3:16 You want to start running late here, with full stamina, to get around the Golden Skeleton on the right. This tricks works whether fog door is still up or not, but changes slightly. If the fog door is up, it's easier to get around the skeleton, but you need to roll once or twice after the fog door fades and hope you don't take an unlucky h it. If the fog door is gone it's slightly harder and less consistent to run around the skeleton, but if you get through the door you're safer from attacks and don't need to roll, instead just keep dashing through the tunnel.
If you're having trouble with this method, there's an easy but slightly slower alternative I learned from square_wave. If you kill the archer, then stand just outside of the Golden Skeleton's aggro range, you can lock onto the skeleton on the left, then throw a Soul Remains directly at him. This will usually cause one or both of the skeletons to walk right off the edge of the cliff. Even if they don't, it moves them away from the tunnel long enough for you to easily make your way past them.
3:30 A lot of players like to roll off the edge to the right here and land next to and kill the Reaper, or push him off the ledge. That's probably a better overall technique because of the second Reaper (which you'll see shortly). If you kill the first Reaper here, then after opening the next fog door you can come back to this top area and kill the second Reaper with your bow and arrows. It's more consistent, but since so many people use it in their videos I wanted to show an alternative approach.
3:35 For the two phantoms here, you want to float back a bit and read what they're about to do. They will either attack you (as the first one does here), or use their beam (as the second one does). If they do an attack you just want to run past. If they use the beam, you want to tuck in tight against them and the wall, and run there until it's safe to go around them. Both methods work on both enemies.
3:54 I use a Soul Remains to draw out the next enemy, because he makes a bad habit of blocking your path long enough for the previous one to hit you in the back with his eye beam.
4:10 The Black Phantoms here generally don't cause much of an issue, but they can definitely kill you with some bad RNG.
4:25 I mess up my first Soul Remains toss here and it causes me a real hassle. The idea is to throw it high and onto the wall behind the phantom. That will cause both him and the Reaper to attack that point uselessly, and you can run through without issue. My first bad throw makes things way riskier, but as you can see I still manage to pull it out, showing just how good Soul Remains really are in these sorts of situations.
5:20 I shouldn't have taken the Thief Ring off here, because it's essential for the Old Hero. Fortunately I realize my mistake before starting the boss fight.
6:27 I start the Old Hero boss fight. As long you have the Thief Ring on, this guy is kind of a joke. Honestly it's faster to just run up behind him and melee him 2-3 hits, then run back to the far side of the screen, where he won't pursue you. But here I show the archer strategy for him, which is even safer. The main key here is to not try to shoot him when he's too close to the back wall, or he will actually run into the "safe zone" and kill you.
After taking the Old Hero down there's just a couple more body form suicides to restore PBWT. Next up, we'll finish off our first full world!
