DFFOO [JP] Cor FR with Laguna BT + Trey traps setup
I remembered someone doing something with Sice tornado setting off Laguna Desperado explosion twice a while back when it was still the BT era, so I was curious what kind of interactions you can do with Laguna and Cor FR. Thus I finally EX+ed Trey for some testing, and the result is quite interesting.
By this point, everyone knows about Cor + Gladio (counters), and I may still do one on that front. I find this odd off-turn setup to be quite fun and revealing, so I thought I would share this one first at least.
Why Trey + Laguna with Cor FR?
Because they satisfy Cor's FR multiple times:
Note that Laguna BT explosion triggers off of whoever is targetted by an ally attack (not whoever it touches, so AoE doesn't inheritably trigger it twice) and it can only be triggered once per turn on each target.
1. Each Laguna explosion counts towards one "off-turn" attack for Cor's FR bonus%.
2. Each of Trey's "traps", not occupying the debuff slots, are considered SEPARATE mechanisms that counts towards the bonus each time they trigger. Therefore you can actually time the following to trigger multiple FR bonus increase in conjunction to triggering Laguna's BT explosion:
(a) Arrow Rain, which functions as an off-turn dmg on each field turn, only triggers one Laguna explosion.
(b) Dynamite, which explodes on EACH target after two turns, triggering one bonus off of each target and triggering each Laguna BT explosion, with a total of 4 bonus increments on 2 targets
(c) Firewall (LD), which essentially functions as an enemy turn counter attack. Triggers one Laguna explosion.
When all of the above triggers, you can get multiple FR bonus trigger off of Trey alone.
Therefore Trey has a wide variety of ways (if not the most) you can get an off-turn attack that can be further exploited with Laguna's BT for even more dmg output per off-turn and HP bonus increases.
The drawback is, you will have to time his 2 charge uses and they don't last as long as something like Kain's jump and Yang's attacks. Trey also is not the fastest person out there. so you might want to get someone like Lunafreya or Rem to facilitate his skill recharges or planting the explosives in quick succession for maximum efficiency.
Optimally you would want Ifrit summon and the enemies to be moving right after, so Trey's LD would trigger, causing even more explosions. Regrettably in this run after their FT has been nullified, their turns got delayed, so there was quite a bit of dmg lost there.
In a similar fashion you can put Trey in a counter team, and it would still work like he has a counter attack, with additional off-turn dmg sources to offer. So even without Laguna's interactions, he can be a good partner for Cor's FR.
Additional info on some of the off-turn dmg interactions:
1. On the topic of triggering separate Laguna BT explosions, Ace's LD card trap and Sice's tornado should behave just like Trey's Dynamite.
2. Similar to Noel's "follow-up" attack, Machina's Spiral's Lynchpin following his main attack command is NOT considered an off-turn, but one continuous action. However, when he reacts to enemy having a turn and does it, it is considered an off-turn attack that count towards a Cor FR trigger.
3. Emperor's traps when triggered on turn (using S1 when S1 trap already placed) is considered not an off-turn attack.
4. Yang's follow-up attack and his actual counter attack are SEPARATE mechanisms, meaning when they both happen they count as two triggers.
(Not tested, but I assume Eight's are also different mechanisms)
Both Trey and Laguna still don't have their FRs and FLs. At the same time they are relatively old characters at this point since their last update. With some creativity though, they can still be used in the FR era on a fun, satisfactory level.
Also aside from just focusing on Cor's off-turn capabilities, do remember that his buff reducing dmg taken and protecting your selected party member from being broken is VERY handy especially in a no tank situation in the Shinryu era. His FR also has a mini BT effect that gives himself rainbow number potential, party wide BRV dmg up and taken reduction, so as long as you play your cards right, there should not be even a need for Alexander here. His HP regen should cover your needs just fine with reduced incoming dmg.
