I've hardly ever played multiplayer in any action game for more than a few matches (well, apart from Doom II over a 28,8 kbps modem some 20 years ago), but Blizzard's new team-based FPS is surprisingly engaging. Overwatch is fun, friendly and inviting to newcomers while also being mechanically deep enough to always reward skill, creativity and coordination. The large roster of characters is uniformly great and even support classes (a natural fit for beginners like myself) feel powerful and exciting to play.

Being something of a Disney fan also helps, since Blizzard has taken its expertise in art design to the logical next level of perfectionism by essentially trying to out-Pixar Pixar. The animated shorts released prior to the game were not only good-looking but unusually effective from a narrative and emotional standpoint (remember, this is the same company which recently produced the unwieldy and derivative storylines of Diablo III and Starcraft II). Aside from the excellent shooter gameplay, I find myself wanting to know more about the world and its central conflict that is the supposed rationale for all these frantic team battles.
