DOOM's campaign was just the right length for the non-stop action offered by its expertly designed and wonderfully focused gameplay. The introduction of new environments, weapons and enemies resulted in a smooth learning curve, while also making sure that the combat scenarios expanded and escalated quickly enough to keep the player sweating. Hurt Me Plenty provided a good trade-off in terms of difficulty but I'm definitely interested in checking out the higher settings as well.

DOOM is certainly not the Doom of my childhood, and at some point I would still like to play a new game which is faithful to the core ideas of classic shooters and preferably also captures the mystery and sadness of Doom II's haunting representation of hell on Earth. Right here and now, however, DOOM is a confidently executed triumph of FPS design, and I think it's fair to say that the game completely wipes the floor with the competition. The developers demonstrate exceptional skills by improving the modern arcade shooter formula with surgical precision while also deconstructing the legacy of past id Software titles in various unexpectedly creative and playful ways. It's a glorious return to form for a troubled studio and easily one of the best action games in years.
