I finally sat down and finished Watch Dogs; not because it felt like a particularly meaningful thing to have accomplished but simply because I was so close to the end of the (lengthy!) campaign that I might as well get it over with. The game that was once supposed to kickstart the next generation of video games turned out to be a very by-the-numbers open world adventure with offensively unimaginative hacking mini-games and a very predictable plot. The detailed and visually impressive recreation of Chicago is unquestionably the star of the game, but even that achievement was relatively quickly overshadowed by another Ubisoft title (Assassin's Creed: Unity) released some six months later. Somewhat surprisingly, last year turned out to be a bump in the road for mainstream AAA titles overall and in that context Watch Dogs is probably the poster child for hyped but ultimately underwhelming releases of 2014.

One a side note, some game writers have argued that Aiden Pearce is one of the least defensible protagonists ever, but for as dull as he undeniably is I don't buy the argument that this guy is any more morally challenged than most male action (anti-)heroes. He's certainly very single-minded and parochial (that is, until the unconvincing "origin story" twist at the very end of the narrative), but I have a hard time blaming this retired cybercriminal directly for any of the plot-related violence. Damien's self-serving attempts to blur the lines notwithstanding, Aiden's story is just the "regretful hero with a haunted past" cliché all over again and the bloodshed that ensues is (at this stage of his life, at any rate) primarily the result of forces beyond the protagonist's control. That said, he *is* an extremely boring character who simply isn't interesting enough to deserve redemption (especially not since that inevitably means there will be sequels to Watch Dogs)...
