The more I play this game, the more I wonder if any of the people who designated Threads of Fate as an "action-RPG" actually played the game. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying it... and the "action" moniker definitely applies. Not so much the RPG part though. It feels more like a distant ancestor to the character action games that would surface during the sixth generation, but with a lot of janky fifth-gen 3D platforming thrown into the mix.

From what Dari tells me, it seems like the "meat" of this game is entirely located within Rue's scenario, which is a total bummer. I mean, Mint is an amazing character -- and I'm not sure how much of that can be credited to the game's localization -- while Rue appears to be a more generic, dull as dishwater, standard RPG protagonist. No snark, no personality, a total blank slate. Mint, on the other hand, is like a perfect anti-heroine. A greedy, bratty ex-princess who was kicked out of her own kingdom for her shortcomings. And instead of buckling down, maturing and becoming a better person, she decides to track down a powerful artifact and use it to take over the entire world. Given just how normal the setting is otherwise, this makes her stand out that much more. Mint manages to be ruder than all of the recurring enemies, which is honestly pretty hilarious.

At the end of the stream, I decided to backtrack and grab some of the magics I missed earlier. And boy, did I miss a bunch of them. Not the elements, those seem to be mandatory. Rather, the various styles. I can kind of understand how I missed some of them -- I can't believe they made me do that platforming puzzle in the underground ruins a second time -- but it was good to have a little spare time after making some progress to do a little exploration.

Not sure how much is left in Mint's story, but this will probably be the high point for the playthrough. Because given just how Rue's been portrayed in-story, I'm sure his scenario is going to be a lot less interesting. Sigh.
