It's kind of ironic. There's almost this obsession among my online friend group about me playing old Squaresoft games. The past couple years, two of the main scheduled games have been from Squaresoft's back catalog... and three of four have been PS1 games. Well, the fourth game was also on PS1, but not originally. Fortunately, out of these two games, there's been one that I've actually looked forward to. Last year, it was Brave Fencer Musashi... and this time, it's Threads of Fate (or Dewprism, as it was known in Japan).

As I mentioned both when this game won the roll and during this stream, this isn't TECHNICALLY my first experience with the game. Back in my younger days, I was an avid reader of PSM and the Official PlayStation Magazine (or OPM, for short). The latter is important, because they'd include a demo disc with each issue... and those little pack-ins introduced me to many games that I still regret not playing. If you're a little slow on the uptake, Threads of Fate was one of those games, with a small demo that gave players a taste of both characters' gameplay.

Yeah, that's right: Threads of Fate has two playable characters, each with their own unique perspective on a shared storyline. I was always planning on going through the game as both characters, but apparently, finishing the game with both of them gives players a special epilogue. And that pretty much sealed the deal, as far as I'm concerned. I ended up starting with Mint for multiple reasons. Apparently, her gameplay's a lot easier, her scenario was the only one KI's played thus far... and how could I not, given her sassy personality. There doesn't seem to be any consensus about which order the two storylines should be played through in -- the game's menu doesn't even focus on either character -- so I should be okay. Just don't expect me to be nearly as surprised or excited during Rue's playthrough.

KI struggles to call this a proper "action RPG". It's actually relatively short -- I'm apparently already almost a third of the way through the game. And there is a LOT more platforming than one might expect from an RPG. To make matters worse, it's that janky, deceptive fifth-gen 3D platforming that has made me apprehensive toward 3D platformers in general. But aside from that, it's been pretty fun. And the game's continue system is very forgiving. I don't know how long this game will take me: I was originally expecting it to be about 8 streams, much like Chrono Trigger, but it might take less? Either way, I'm having a blast so far. I just hope my enthusiasm can survive two playthroughs.
