Excessive Narcissism: Is 'narcissist' Overused?
Do you think our society uses the term "narcissist" too much?
Are we "crowding out" other possibilities because we're so bent on the word "narcissist?"
The clinical criteria for narcissistic personality disorder is different than most people think and to get the diagnosis, the individual has to meet at least 5 or more symptoms/traits and have both genetic and environmental influences.
The clinical criteria is:
***MUST entail 5 or more symptoms/behaviors that occur together
-Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (exaggerates, "delusional" superpowers or grandiosity.
-Marked impairment that makes them believe they are "special"
-Has a sense of entitlement (unreasonable expectations or desire for favortism)
-Lacks empathy
-Is often envious of others or believes others are envious of them
-Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes
These behaviors are pervasive and continue to be a problem in multiple settings such as work or school, the community, and home.
There is an unrealistic sense of self-importance and superiority (NOT just arrogant behaviors).
They overestimate their abilities (e.g., "I can fix just about anything. I've been around the block a few times so I have learned a lot. If I wanted to get into plumbing or landscaping that would be a piece of cake. I just don't ever pursue it. But I know all there is to know").
May be surprised that the praise they feel they deserve isn't forthcoming as they thought it would be.
*Keep in mind that while there are different forms of narcissism, the most common narcissist may live inside their head believing that everyone is watching them on a stage and giving their admiration to them, bowing down with praise, and showering them with approval.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE CASE:
An example of this might be your sister, who is showing signs of clinical narcissism, who has done very well in her career and expects your mom and dad to praise her for being a success.
When this doesn't happen she may go away accussing them of favoring you, ignoring her, or never being good enough for them. Instead of looking at the fact that she is the problem in this puzzle for wanting praise and admiration, she blames everyone else for not "supporting" her.
Your sister may then turn to people who she feels are "high status" and associate with them rather than you and your parents because "you don't ever understand me. I need people who understand where I'm at in life."
