Deny, deny, deny.
They understand that if they deny any wrongdoing that they could get a lesser sentence, a plea deal, or no time at all.
Some criminal defense attornies will encourage their client to deny, deny, deny any wrongdoing that they may be accused of in order to buy some time to figure things out.
Pathological liars do the same thing. They deny, minimize, gaslight, or invalidate all in an attempt to make you feel "crazy."
And sometimes, siblings know exactly what buttons to push to get you to "breakdown" in a fit of frustration or rage. This lets the sibling off and now they can blame you for being "emotional" while they get away with the lie.
