PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND AVOIDANCE: WHY YOU CAN'T STAND YOUR FAMILY
Avoidance can be a protective mechanism that can help us gain control over our environment.
Avoidance can also be a way that we try to make sense out of our lives. For example, let's say your family has bipolar disorder that is untreated and your mother is a narcissist. It might be easier for you to avoid any connection with them because any connection with your parents makes your life difficult and stressful.
Your avoidance may then become avoidance of emotions, intimate and close relationships, commitments, and reality itself.
Avoidance can be a very toxic behavior that is experienced by you OR something you have expeirenced at the hands of your unhealthy family dynamic.
