Elfquest was the brainchild of Wendy and Richard Pini; an underground cult comic series which took the traditional fantasy tropes of elves, trolls, and fairies and reinvigorated them with a savage, primal theme. Fire and Flight the first volume reveals that elves were once tall, luminous beings of great magic but after they arrived on 'the world of the two moons' and were chased into the woods by prehistoric man they slowly devolved into squat, brutish and mischievous survivors. Decades later the chief of the Wolfrider clan (so known because they ride wolves) and his friend Skywise rescue one of their fellows who has been captured by humans, but in the process kill the leader's son. In retaliation the humans set fire to the forest to drive the elves away, and for a time they migrate to the troll caves until inevitable misunderstandings drive them once again out into the great plains. There the Wolfriders meet the aztec-like Sun elves and Cutter finds that his affection for Leetah is shared by a Sun elf braved named Rayek.
And later on still the Wolfriders run afoul of a dark goddess-like being who lives in the mountains named Winnowill...but how that turns out is in the second volume.
The entire series is basically the elves meeting other creatures, other elves, fleeing from, battling, or dealing with humans and generally rediscovering their lost history as well as finding a new home for future generations. It can be viciously violent and none of the nudity or sex scenes are censored so it's a solidly adult production: a bit like fantasy evolved out of the silliness that is often associated with elves and trolls and magic and such. It also had it's own lore, ideas (elvish telepathic 'sending' was pretty inventive) and monsters as well.
In other words WHY ISN'T THIS A MOVIE SERIES YET???
