Making an immediate name for itself with a unique combination of old school sprites, 80s music and visuals, and a bizarre and mysterious story of masked hitmen responding to coded hotline calls, Hotline Miami has received quite a few recent accolades for it's tight gameplay and unapologetic content. One of the clear influences (so clear it's credited in the game itself) was the Nicolas Winding Refn movie 'Drive' which provided the main bulk of the dialogue and many of the scenes for my own trailer.
The game itself appeals to me because of how boldly the developers adapted 80s action film aesthetics and coupled it to a vaguely existential plot revealed in not only cutscenes but character interactions, as well as much of it being inferred from the levels themselves.
