XCOM is renowned as one of the best and earliest examples of a tactical military turn based game, pitting a paramilitary strike force against an extraterrestrial invasion. A reboot was announced which would be a first person shooter developed by some of the people behind Bioshock, but fans of the original were up in arms about this 'betrayal' of one of the few turn based franchises still in existence. As if in answer Firaxis has made a modern game with the same meticulous outfitting, base management, and urban warfare as the original called Enemy Unknown.
In X-Com games you take the role of a commander in an underground multinational initiative designed to covertly prepare for warfare against aliens. With a well equipped if scant team you negotiate aggressively with the likes of insidious 'alien gray' like Sectoids, human disguised Thin Men, drones, mutons, floaters, and other deadly creatures with reverse engineered technology. All the while you must pick your battles cautiously as ignoring one nation to aid another will get your assistance from that nation severely penalized during your later missions.
