FF4 DS MBO - Part V: Scarmiglione 2
MBO = Mandatory Battles Only
MBO implies that the game is completed with as few battles finished as possible. There are no restrictions as to how the experience from mandatory battles is distributed and divided between party members. The challenge is played from a new game, not a new game plus.
Second battle against Scarmiglione, this time against his undead form.
Scarm is no longer accompanied by his undead minions and unless his counters are triggered he'll use nothing but his physical attack.
In a normal game, any wise player would see the back attack coming from earlier experience and switch everybody's places in the row so that Cecil starts in the front and the mages in the back. This isn't the case in our challenge however. See, nobody in the party knows Protect yet and because of that any physical will kill anybody but Cecil, even if positioned in the front row. It makes sense to keep Cecil, as the only character with a high enough defence and HP to survive the attacks in the back, so that those hits that hit him are reduced.
Scarmiglione has counters for physical attacks and black magic, so it's a bad idea to hit him with either (not that you'd want to poke him with Cecil's dark sword anyway). At the same time, he does nothing at all when you use curative items and healing spells against him.
Using an Elixir on the boss actually ends the battle, but that's an easy way out and kinda unfair. I have Tellah and Porom (I think that's the one, I always mix them up) cast Cura/Cure on the boss, and Cecil aid them with Hi-Potions (I use up all the Hi-Potions I had from map completion in the process). Blink must be cast ASAP to allow all the mages to avoid the otherwise fatal physical blows, and Slow is also a very good idea. Is there even a single boss resistant to Slow? It always seem to work for me.
