FF6 - Low Level Game Part XIII: Dullahan
Another really complicated battle. I got almost as lucky as in the battle against Atma Weapon!
Dullahan attacks normally (I have never seen him miss either, so my assumption is that his attacks can't be evaded?), uses Ice 2, 3 and Pearl, which can be both reflected with the help of the Wall Rings and absorbed with Runic. He also seems to be in an Auto-Haste status, often getting two turns before anyone else has a chance to act.
What really does make Dullahan dangerous are his unique moves, N.Cross and Absolute0. N.Cross freezes your party. I'm not sure what exactly determined the result, but whenever he used that move on me, I had everyone but Celes freeze - not sure what the reason for that is. You're in a very disadvantageous situation after he pulls off that move, so it can be a good idea to have one character KO'd: a killed character can be revived, and I have no means of returning a frozen character back to action.
Absolute0 is the biggest threat. It always connects and slays the entire party. You can only survive if you Jump, which is not a reliable strategy at all. I've tried it and not only does it the battle a mess, but you're not exactly guaranteed to keep fighting if you have 1-2 characters in the air at a time.
So, what do we do? To avoid Absolute0, we pray he never uses it. Simple as that. He tends to use it very often, so what the video shows is a result of many failed attempts.
The battle can be divided unto two parts.
In the first phase, you Runic every single spell that comes your way. If you just let the Wall Rings do the work, Dullahan will heal himself with every Ice 2/3 spell, making your offensive actions useless.
The priority during this phase is to have Edgar Debilitate the boss repeatedly. Once he is weak to ice and holy, you may stop using Runic. Now his own spells will hurt him quite a bit.
Second phase (No Runic): he'll eventually use that nasty Absolute0 and there's nothing we will able to do about it. However, the longer we fight against him the more likely it is that he uses the rotten move. Therefore, he must die as quickly as possible.
I found the best way of dealing damage aside from reflecting spells and tossing elemental rods (by Celes and Edgar, who get a massive Magic Power boost from Enhancers) is by having Sabin in the front attack with his best two weapons with Genji Gloves occupying the second Relic slot. After Debilitate, his attacks may deal almost 1000 damage (IF he does critical damage AND a Fire spell is unleashed).
A cheap method of winning this battle is having Celes Runic him in the beginning to drain all his MP, while nobody attacks. After being hurt a few times (half a dozen or so, doesn't really matter), Dullahan enters the phase during which both the deadly moves and the physical attacks are used, so we avoid that. Once his MP is gone and he can no longer cast any magic, equip a Soul Sabre and kill him. That's it, I do believe the hard way is much more challenging.
