A user named Garland kept telling me that among the great FF games out there, there's one I absolutely have to play. An obscure relic if you will, unfairly ignored when mainstream games like FF 4 Heroes of Light and Final Fantasy Legend II get all the media attention.

I was unable to find any coherent information online concerning this hidden gem, but since I know that FF3 for the NES is the same game as FF6 (why would one have two titles for the same damn game?) and this is the seventh sequel of Final Fantasy, then common sense dictates that this is FF4, the fourth FF game for the NES, where we might learn what happened to the Onion Knight guy after his successful quest.

Since I'm a Hardcore Gamer™, I decided that my first playthrough would be the Low Level Game. If you want proof that my levels are indeed the lowest you can get, have a look at the sample clip of me dodging a random encounter. This way I ensure that my party is at its weakest for the boss battles, making this playthough -a challenge-.

At the start of the recording, I pick up a Potion, an item that is sure to prove handy at some point.

The boss is a peculiar enemy called Scorpion whom we face in a newfangled Reactor area. He is capable of both fearsome physical blows and devastating magic. At first, my intuition suggested me to wait a little bit and start attacking when it would raise its tail so that the boss is at its most vulnerable; however, no such thing happened so I began attacking anyway.

My characters at this point are Cloud and Barret, both quite interesting. Cloud is a red mage of sorts it seems, with access to thunder magic, while Barret is bulkier and has rock magic, which nails the boss supereffectively (since he's a bug). If we come across any dual bug/flying enemies, I expect 4x effective damage.

It was a fascinating boss battle full of unexpected twists and cliffhangers.

Overall, this is sure to be a fun Low Level Game and I can't wait to use that thing called Materia in action. Cloud seems like a very mysterious protagonist and laconic and insightful lines uttered by him like "Be my guest" mystify me and make me beg for more unfolding of his character development. He's up there with the best FF characters IMHO.

As an NES title, this classic doesn't disappoint.
