Thanks to everyone who voted. I think I got exactly the same number of votes as one year ago for the Crystal masochist run, which is a nice surprise, but this time they were really close and I needed a tiebreaker to pick the Pokemon from the first pool, which didn't let me begin the run because two of them (Kricketot and Bidoof) were available before the first gym.

And here's how the votes played out:

Pool 1 winner - Kricketot with 8 votes! (tied with Bidoof and Combee, tie broken by Xator Nova, 5 - Wurmple, 4 - Burmy, Cherubi)

Getting Combee would've been bad because I'd have to use my starter for the first gym until I could get honey and actually begin the challenge. I'm kinda happy that Bidoof wasn't picked because, honestly, the Simple ability is pretty broken even without X item usage. Kricketot has an advantage in the second gym while Bidoof laughs at the first one (even if it doesn't evolve to learn STAB Water Gun).

Pool 2 winner - Pachirisu with 10 votes! (9 - Chatot, 6 - Hoothoot, 5 - Drifloon, Buneary, 3 - Cleffa)

Yeah, I didn't get an HM Fly user so I'll have to rotate between some HM slaves for different tasks. Pachirisu should be fun to use - iirc when I played 0 exp in SoulSilver, he played a key role in defeating Red at Mt Silver.

Pool 3 winner - Finneon with 11 votes! (7 - Chingling, Barboach, 4 - Glaceon, Goldeen, Lickitung, 1 - Leafeon)

This was the most popular pick of all, but is he really that bad in-game? We're gonna find out soon.

Pool 4 winner - Bonsly with 10 votes! (8 - Shieldon, 6 - Chansey, Umbreon, 5 - Duskull, 4 - Nosepass)

This was the pool of midgame tanks, Bonsly being the least tanky I should think. I hope catching him @ Trophy Garden isn't going to be too time-consuming and iirc it should have Mimic right off the bat to evolve into one walloping tree.

Pool 5 winner - Swablu with 8 votes! (7 - Carnivine, Mantyke, Glalie, 6 - Swinub, 3 - Tropius)

The competition was tight in the final pool of lategame picks. I wonder if people voted Swablu because they thought it was that bad or because they like him a lot. Well, it's a Pokemon I'm sure I'll enjoy using!

So, it's
Kricketot
Pachirisu
Finneon
Bonsly
Swablu

So the challenge starts and I catch a Kricketot. Neutral nature, the IVs seemingly not too bad but who can really tell at lv. 3? Yeah, not me. Came with the Metronome held item which boosts repetitive actions by 10% per use - 5% chance so I got pretty lucky huh. That said, Metronome is useless because Kricketot doesn't learn an offensive move until lv. 10; this includes TMs.

Kricketot is stuck with Growl and Bide, making him a sort of hybrid of Caterpie/Weedle/Wurmple and Seedot. He's in the Medium Slow exp group which linguistically would mean that he grows 'somewhat slowly' but what it means in practice is that it reaches level 10 the fastest excluding the mons in the Fluctuating group (which is rare).

And with Growl and some Potions, believe it or not, Kricketot takes no time at all to evolve, which gives Bide - a priority move beginning with this gen - very effective usage. I actually could have evolved prior to this battle if I weren't skipping trainers (not to overlevel).

So in this video we see Kricketot unevolved for the very last time in this challenge, fighting his way up with Bide. He handles Starly first, recovers HP with a Potion and Growls Piplup just to be sure that he doesn't attack three times in a row, KOing us before we can unleash a counterattack. This attempt was different in that a stray crit reduced me to 1 HP away from a game over (though I think I forgot to remove Chimchar from the party, but obviously I wouldn't have continued the battle if Kricky had got KO'd).

In the Platinum version, Kricketot was given the 60 BP Bug Bite at L16, 6 levels after his evolution time, which I decided against waiting for - Biding until L16 is boring and I didn't want to overlevel for Roark either. Kricketune compensates for the lack of Bug Bite nicely with the earlygame Return, as it's around for long enough to get its power growing fast.

The brave Kricketot marches bravely along to face Roark. Will its bravery persevere?
