The battle against Dullahan is hardly an ordinary one. It's major obstacle for No Equipment Natural Magic players and I've actually been told by two people that they were unable to beat the boss to proceed further in the storyline. If Dullahan is defeated, you gain access to your strongest characters and extremely effective skills (like Sabin's Phantom Rush). However, this boss is anything but a joke.

A guide on GameFAQs suggests that extreme grinding is necessary in order to overpower Dullahan. The author of the FAQ goes as far as to recommend breaking the No Equipment rule and allowing Celes to Runic the boss's spells.

Now... Imagine my surprise when I defeated Dullahan with all four of my party members at lv. 25!

The main problem here is the lack of convenient ways to heal. Only the Cure spell is available to Celes. Setzer, of course, can heal the party with Slot and so can Sabin (though there are other things he should be doing). Our main way of healing here is through Items: X-Potions, Elixirs and sometimes Hi-Potions. There's a reason we've been conserving all this stuff for so long. It's okay; after this battle, we can get Locke and access to restorative items in infinite amounts.

The strategy goes like this: Edgar must debilitate the boss. While he tries to achieve that effect, Sabin should deal some damage with his basic physical blitz while the others keep the party as close to full health as possible. Setzer may very well help Sabin out but personally I never bothered to learn how the Slot command works. A funny instance with Slot was when I got three bars and it summoned a creature that damaged the boss and hurt my characters for 2K+ damage. The battle was over right there: my characters' max HP scarcely exceed 1K. I got three bars in this recording as well but fortunately the boss went down before Setzer could execute his special.

I didn't have good luck with debilitating the boss and this lead to obvious problems: Dullahan stopped just countering my attacks with physicals and proceeded to cast spells. Holy always KOs its target, Blizzara hurts quite a bit and Blizzaga is extremely dangerous. The last time I managed to beat him, I didn't see Blizzaga at all and I think that's why I was able to win.

This time, three of my party members were KO'd at one point and I was asking myself why I was still playing and didn't restart. Fortunately, I could revive the fallen and get them back to full health.

After that, the boss finally got debilitated to Holy. This means two things: Sabin can now deal more damage with his holy-elemental blitz instead of performing the first blitz he gets and Celes with her magic stat can now throw a Holy Rod at the boss for impressive damage.

I got lucky this time around, as I didn't see Absolute Zero (just as bad as Blizzaga) and Northern Cross didn't freeze anyone (the only way of curing frozen characters is to use fire-elemental techniques on them. In a NENMG challenge, that means we can only toss Flame Rods at them).

I wouldn't call myself lucky though, the sequence from 2 to 4 minutes in the recording was quite tense and I didn't expect to get back up unscarred.
