FFTA - MMONINSIC Part I: Intro / The Cheetahs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L756JDt_8Do&fmt=18
Watch in high quality. Seriously, my FFTA videos have never looked better.
I KNOW, I KNOW. UGH.
I don't normally feel the necessity to name the challenges I play, but, since I'm recording it, it makes sense to come up with an abbreviation of some sort.
MMONINSIC stands for:
MMO - Mandatory Missions Only
You are only allowed to participate in compulsory storyline battles. No random encounters can be fought, same goes for other optional missions without which the game can be completed (including Dispatch missions).
As you can conclude, it limits us heavily. Our levels will always be a bit too low, we won't have access to good equipment and we will be struggling to master those abilities that we already have.
This seems like an excellent rule to me because most challenges are made possible owing to extensive preparation. There's not much of it here. You beat a storyline mission and proceed to the next one.
NI - No Items
Self-explanatory. The item command is unequipped as soon as you gain access to your clan and never equipped again.
NS - No Shops
You cannot visit shops and buy anything. This means the only ways we can get items is: 1) as rewards to storyline missions (obviously, we reset until we get the good stuff), 2) treasure hunt (I'm not very satisfied with the setup I've chosen but there's none that strikes me as the only good Ivalice setup) and 3) as your clan levels increases. I'm not sure if we'll get anything out of the last one since we're not doing many missions.
IC - Initial Classes
We can only use the original six members of the clan and we cannot change their classes. That means the game is played with 2 Soldiers, a White Monk, a White Mage, an Archer and everyone's favourite moogle, Montblanc.
An important theme in this challenge is keeping everyone alive. If you let somebody die, they'll start lagging behind the rest of the team in level and will gradually become useless and unable to keep up with the enemy.
When I first tried this mission, I expected the enemy would quickly surrender and was surprised to see how noticeable the difference in equipment is. Without good armour purchased in a shop, enemy's Fighter and White Monk are able to kill White Mage, Archer and White Monk in a single hit. Moreover, the enemy's Monk is able to do that from afar. Even with Ritz and Shara's help, my party members die very quickly.
I picked Archer, WMage and Monk because I wanted them to learn their moves so that they could quickly switch to new equipment and learn new abilities afterwards but found out that Archer needs Blackout BADLY in this battle.
Blinding the enemy fighters seems to help us quite a lot in this battle. White Monk doesn't know Air Render yet, so he should be cautious: anything kills him. Marche is able to tank, however, as his defence is quite high, as is his HP. But the most important thing is to blind as many enemies as possible before the two (wait, three) clans clash. There's a bit of luck involved.
It's not that hard to finish this mission successfully but it is much harder to do it without any casualties. That's where most of the resets came from.
In this series, I'm also going to show what my clan looked like for each of the missions, in case anyone else wants to start this challenge and compare their progress.
Capitalised abilities have already been learned, all others available only through current equipment.
Marche/Soldier (lv. 3)
Shortsword
Cuirass
Bronze Shield
- COMBAT COMBO, First Aid, Shieldbearer
White Monk (lv. 3)
Hard Knuckles
Leather Garb
Red Boots
- Whirlwind
White Mage (lv. 3)
White Staff
Hempen Robe
- Cure
Archer (lv. 2)
Char Bow
Leather Garb
- Blackout
I've given my Monk Red Boots for extra defence because he needs them more than Marche who has armour on and White Mage/Archer who shouldn't be too close to the enemy anyway.
