FFVIA LLNSNI Part XIII: Humbaba
The first boss battle in the World of Ruin.
You needn't fight Humbaba so early. He's tough, and you're better off waiting for more party members and better spells/equipment. However, you can fight him with a party of Celes and Sabin, and even with Celes solo before Sabin joins. The latter is ridiculous as this battle cannot be done solo at this point, but doing this with Sabin is very well possible and also makes for a great challenge.
Terra tries to fight Humbaba first and fails at it miserably. Most of her attacks will do 0 damage to the boss. You're supposed to lose.
This is where Celes and Sabin comes in. Humbaba is weak to poison. Bio is the best spell to be cast here but what also works wonders is duel wielding Poison Claws with Sabin in the front row. The raw damage is good enough as it is, and the damage is just outstanding if a critical hit or a lucky Poison casting strikes in.
With only two people, and Humbaba having fatal moves in 1000 Needles and Solar Plex, we are too likely to lose at any point. It's important to have enough MP to cast a Raise spell for both Sabin and Celes, and if Humbaba knocks out a party member again we'll be out of MP to cast another one.
Still, our chances to win aren't too low if we're doing it right. Reflect Rings are a must as Humbaba will cast Thundara and Thundaga a lot. This is a good time to charge your action gauges in the meantime.
With Reflect Rings equipped, we have no good means of recovering HP. This means that even weak physical attacks will do us in.
I considered summoning Golem but didn't want to waste the MP better spent on casting Bio with Celes. The quicker the boss dies, the less likely we are to lose in the process. This is one of the battles we should end as soon as possible.
We get the Fenrir summon after the battle.
