Recently, I've been trying to unlock the hidden Extra Mode in every Touhou game I can possibly achieve that. Though that doesn't do much as I often have trouble actually reaching the extra boss in the mode I unlock, it's still a good feeling to know you've unlocked the extra stage in most of the games in the series.

Until today my list of Touhou shooters where I had Extra unlocked was only missing Subterranean Animism, Perfect Cherry Blossom (damn it Youmu) and... Mystic Square from the PC-98 games.

I've been playing Mystic Square, on different difficulties, a lot and it's strange that I never even got close to the final boss without using continues. Stage four boss, which is actually two boss battles in one plus a boss of your "choice", always raped out of a good half of my life and Shinki's maid tore me to pieces in the next stage. And though I could swear I'd got it all figured out, it didn't go well.

I have no clue why I was recording this attempt from the very beginning of the first level knowing that I suck at the series and am very unlikely to 1cc this one at any given attempt, but it was worth it apparently.

I was playing with Mima, though she isn't exactly the character I like to play the most in this game. She's got speed, but that also means more trouble for me to squeeze myself into the smallest holes between bullets, and she's also got power. Not quite as much as Marisa, I believe, but for some reason the worst scores I've got in this game are all with Marisa. I'm pretty sure I can destroy bosses quicker with Mima though, maybe she just has stronger bombs? Well, Mima is awesome anyway.

I didn't lose a single life during the first three lives. Nothing outstanding but shit tends to happen, especially with me being tired and losing concentration.

I reached the stage four bosses with 8 lives and was prepared to lose most of them, as usual. Well, it went better than I'd expected. I was liberal with using bombs, even more than I probably should have - still, better than dying without bombing at all.

So, the stage 4 boss is Yuki and Mai, the two witches. You first face them both at the same time, and it's terribly unpleasant. Concentrate on killing one of the girls and the one alive will solo from that point. The white witch seems to have simpler attacks than the black one, so I decide to get rid of the black girl, as I normally do. If the Marisa lookalike is left alive, she'll spam crazy barrage walls and extremely fast danmaku rain, whereas her partner is a bit more meek for my tastes.

Next is stage five. I enter it with not two, not three, but SEVEN lives, which is more than ever before - in a state of euphoria. This can't be good, and it wasn't. I die twice during the stage, both times with more than one bomb in my pockets. When I reach Yumeko, Shinki's maid, I get my focus back and expect to do my best there.

Yumeko was almost always THE boss to prompt me to use a continue coin (sometimes twice, embarrassingly). I was focused and knew when exactly it felt right to bomb, and got away with five lives for the final stage.

The stage itself is a joke and I didn't mess anything up. But when I did reach Shinki, who I do believe to be harder than the previous two, or three-four, whatever, challenging bosses, I simply got nervous.

I never had any trouble with her opening attacks (the first four kinds), but here I suddenly found the necessity to bomb constantly and then lost a life in the stupidest manner imaginable. Looks like I felt so close to finally clearing the game that I wanted to bomb before anything and I guess it wasn't a very bad idea...

So yeah, watch to find out if I manage to 1cc Mystic Square with Mima, the revengeful ghost.
