Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster - Ch. 16 - Ghido's Cave
I'm back y'all! I hope y'all had a nice holiday. I took a semi-quick trip to Miami to visit family and was unfortunately away from my computer. I really wanted to finish FFV before I left, but this game is long, yo! Anyway, last time we infiltrated one of Exdeath's Barrier Towers in hopes of dismantling the barrier around Exdeath's Castle. But this was easier said than done! First off, we had a couple of 'monster-in-a-box' treasure chests that were seriously tough. Depending on your luck, you either faced a single Red Dragon or a pair of Yellow Dragons. Both were quite formidable.
But the true challenge was waiting for us at the top of the tower with the boss monsters, Atomos. Whenever all the members of your party are alive, this jerk will cast Comet twice, which will most likely kill two of your party. Atomos then slowly drags the KOed characters towards him until they're close enough to be wormholed out of the fight, permanently! His one weakness is that he is susceptible to Sleep. I don't know what happened, but it looks like I was able to put him to sleep and keep him that way until I finished him off. The real tearjerker was afterwards, when Xezat honorably sacrificed himself. Jeez, these Dawn Warriors are dropping like flies. What's gonna happen now?!?
CHAPTER 16 - GHIDO'S CAVE
So remember that sage named Ghido that Krile wanted you to go visit? Well, now that we have a submarine, it doesn't really matter if the island his cave was on sank. Faris reminds you of this (at arguably an insensitive time, since Xezat had just died) while you're on the sub after the Barrier Tower. The sub gives you access to a couple new areas, as a matter of fact. Remember there was a guy who mentioned a lake surrounded by mountain and how he felt some eyes watching him? Well, we're going to head there right now! You'll want to head to the continent located in the Northwest. Submerge your sub and you'll notice an underwater cave that you can enter.
The purpose of this little side-quest is to get the Summon Catoblepas. It only has 5,000 HP, but it has a nasty habit of countering any attacks with a move called 'Evil Eye' that causes petrify. It's especially annoying, as it will use this move twice in a row. There's two ways of dealing with this. You can either equip gear such as a Ribbon (or Aegis Shield if you have it, but I don't at this point of the game), which will make you immune to petrify. The Ribbon can only be equipped by either a Dancer or Freelancer OR any character that has the 'Equip Ribbon' ability. The immune character can either try to beat Catoblepas solo, or act as the healer, using Esuna or Gold Needles.
But I'll show you an easy way of beating this guy. In the brief cave you pass before arriving at the lake area, you'll encounter a monster called an 'Ironback'. They're fairly strong and have a good defense, but are weak against Ice. What you need to do is weaken it and then have a Beastmaster use 'Catch'. Then release it when you encounter Catoblepas. This will do +5,000 HP right off the bat, killing him in one shot. Neat! I wish the Catoblepas summon was more useful, but it merely inflicts petrify on the targets, if possible. The caves are a good place to level/money grind, as you can easily just pop into the sub and heal for free!
Ok, next we'll head to Ghido's Cave, which is located underwater to the east of Surgate Castle. There's no boss in this area, but there's a couple of annoying monsters here, like the Metamorph. The Metamorph has 7,000 HP and will transform into other monsters. Normally, it's not really much trouble but I had an encounter where it transformed into a Zombie Dragon and it used its Zombie Breath move on my party. There's also no treasure here, so it's all strictly business. Eventually you'll encounter a turtle which turns out to be Sage Ghido himself!
Ghido finally explains the true origin of Exdeath. In the Forest of Moore, there once was a tree which was used to seal away all evil. However, so much evil was concentrated in that tree that it eventually transformed into an evil being, Exdeath. Sage Ghido kept him sealed for 500 years but the seal broke about 30 years ago, which was when the Dawn Warriors sealed away Exdeath on Bartz'/Lenna's/Faris' planet. Ghido says seals are meant to be broken and now it's time to defeat Exdeath once and for all. He instructs us to head to the Forest of Moore. There's something there that Exdeath needs or wants, so we must hurry.
Our last stop is the town of Moore. It's the western-most town on the map. If you submerge, you'll notice an area that doesn't match with the coast above water. It will allow you to travel further inland while underwater. When you re-merge, you'll be in a small lake alongside the town of Moore. We pop in and talk to everyone. There's a 'Main Gauche' hidden in one of the barrels on the outside of the pub. There's also some good magic and better gear here. But it looks like I'm almost out of money...
