Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster - Ch. 17 - Forest of Moore
Last time, we went on a submarine side-quest before sinking into Ghido's Cave. Did y'all get Catoblepas? If so, did you use an alternate strategy? I would love to hear about it. This game offers so many possibilities through it's job system. I would say it's even more complex than 'Octopath Traveler'. Anyway, Ghido the turtle sage tells us that Exdeath is after something in the Forest of Moore. In a great reveal, he tells us the origin of Exdeath and how he was a tree in that forest, meant to seal away evil.
Much like the dragon balls in the final arc of Dragon Ball GT, the tree absorbed so much evil that it was transformed into an evil being, Exdeath. Ghido gives us the 'Guardian Branch', which will allow us to advance in the Forest of Moore. If you tried going there earlier, you'll notice you can't really advance much. So now we'll finally get to see what's going there.
CHAPTER 17 - FOREST OF MOORE
I came across something interesting in my last chapter: if you're zombied and then rest, you're still zombied even though your stats are recovered. In fact, you're in this quasi in between phase, because you can't use Holy Water. You have to hop into a battle and let the zombification wreck you anew. I decided to omit this part, as it's not really interesting or important.
The town of Moore is a pit, but strangely enough, you'll need lots of money to get everything useful. I didn't have enough, but I was at least able to buy the sweet sweet Level 4 magic spells, including Curaga and Graviga. The later will be particularly useful in the boss battle ahead. The forest of Moore is not a particularly long area. There's a few treasures, including some good money. If you can't figure out how to advance, look for a tree with a hole in it. Check the map, zoom in and look carefully if you still can't find it! Eventually, you'll trigger a scene where the forest burns down.
There's a treasure you can't reach, just accept it. Instead, you'll see a hole open up and a moogle will come out. He'll beckon to you to follow. In this moogle cave, the water below can heal you. So make sure you take a sip, if needed. The boss fight is coming up, so it's a good idea to switch jobs at this point. That way you can heal if there's a change in HP or MP after the job change. Go back above ground and now the fire will have been exhausted. There's a few more treasures, including the Flame Shield and Flametongue sword. Eventually you'll find the Guardian Tree and the guardian branch will allow you to enter it.
So here's the boss fight: four crystals that are referred to as '???'. Each one has an HP of 7,777 and each has it's own element. The tough part about this boss is that when each crystal's HP gets low, it will use a super-strong magic spell. So resist the impulse to spread the damage around and just focus on one crystal at a time. This came be a tough fight, but luckily there's multiple ways to kill this boss easily:
1) A Chemist can use 'Mix' to combine Dark Matter' with a Phoenix Down to create a 'Death Potion' which will kill one crystal instantly. You can steal a dark matter from a Zombie Dragon at Drakenvale.
2) A Beastmaster can 'Catch' and then 'Release' an 'Aquathorn' (near Bal Castle), which will cast Death (not 100% though)
3) There is a monster in the Moore area called a 'Mykale' that you can steal a 'Death Sickle' (or maybe you already have one from earlier) from. Characters that use axes can equip this and there's a chance it will cast Death after attacking (about 33% chance).
4). Additionally, you can use Blue Magic spells like Death Claw or Missile to take a huge chunk of HP. You must finish it off quickly to avoid the strong magic triggered by low HP.
I decided not to do any of those, though. Instead, in the first turn I had my two spellblade-capable characters enchant their weapons with 'Drain'. Then, I summoned Golem to provide some much needed defense and had my healer shore up any HP loss. Then in my second turn, I used a Time Mage to cast 'Graviga' on one crystal and had my two physical attackers finish it off. Simply repeat that same process for the remaining three crystals, making sure to heal as needed. The need to heal should be somewhat limited, as two characters are basically healing themselves!
After the battle, there's a number of tough plot twists that are hard to stomach. I won't get into it here, in case there's someone who reads this before watching/playing. I haven't played this game in a while, so I definitely forgot about this part...
