Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster - Ch. 15 - Barrier Tower
So last time, we tried to go visit Sage Ghido, who was contacting Krile telepathically. However, Exdeath was one step ahead of us and sank the island, just as we were about to get there. Luckily, there was a castle nearby. It belonged to Xezat Surgate, the fourth Dawn Warrior. However King Xezat was not there. He was off leading a fleet of ships to attack Exdeath. Our windrake was able to land safely on Xezat's ship and after a touching reunion, our heroes went below deck for some rest.
The rest was short-lived, as Exdeath's monsters began attacking. We had ourselves a third tussle with Gilgamesh and then found ourselves in a mysterious submarine. Xezat reveals that the ships were just a decoy. The true plan was to dig a tunnel leading to one of Exdeath's barrier towers. Xezat goes downstairs to the generator, while instructing us to climb the tower and destroy the antenna. Can we pull it off?
CHAPTER 15 - BARRIER TOWER
Oh boy, this is a hard chapter for a number of reasons. First off, you'll face a couple monsters hiding in treasure boxes. You'll either face a Red Dragon or a pair of Yellow Dragons. Both are a bit of a pain. The easy way to beat the Red Dragon is to use 'Control'. It worked for me once, but then every other time I tried it, Control kept missing. So instead, I equipped whoever can Summon with Gaia Gear and used Titan for a good amount of damage. The Red Dragon can use some strong attacks, so this is not a walk in the park by any means. The normal monsters here are not super weak, but nothing to write home about either.
I faced a pair of Yellow Dragons in the second treasure chest. I repeated the same pattern here, but it was still a little rough going. This fight yields you a Gold Hairpin, which halves MP consumption. As you reach the second half of the tower, Xezat will contact you via the Whisperweed. And then as you reach the top, he will shut down the generator. However, a boss monster is waiting in the wings to pounce. Atomos! I really lucked out here in this fight somehow. Atomos will always start out by using Comet on two of your fighters. It will continue to use Comet unless at least one of your fighters is KOed. At this point Atomos will slowly pull the KOed character towards it. While it is doing this, it won't use Comet but will use other moves like Gravity.
When the KOed character is pulled close enough to Atomos, it will use a move called 'Wormhole', which will permanently remove the character from the fight. The only way to beat this boss is to allow one of your characters to die and then try to kill it while it's busy pulling your KOed character towards it. Atomos is not immune to sleep, so I had my Spellblade-capable Ninjas enchant their weapons with sleep and attacked at will. Then my Summon-capable Red Mage (with Gold Hairpin equipped) kept using Titan. I was hoping Bartz, with his Dancing Dagger would use Sword Dance, but it didn't happen in this playthrough.
What's crazy here though, is I think I was able to actually get it to fall asleep and stay asleep. All four of my characters were alive, yet it did not use Comet. Plus, even in the opening Comet attack, it didn't seem to KO my character. This was a complete fluke and you shouldn't try to replicate it, but I'll take the win. I'm told Bio works fairly well here, as well. So you could enchant your weapons with Bio instead. Anyway, when you're done here, the antenna will be destroyed and collapse. The barrier around Exdeath's Castle will fail.
However, it appears Xezat is now trapped in the generator room. Perhaps, this is why he was so insistent on not going with him. It appears he knew the risks and what could happen. Xezat goes out like a hero though, as the room is destroyed. Galuf couldn't keep himself from trying to help his dear friend, however Bartz knocks him out. In Xezat's final words, he urges Galuf to head back to the submarine, so he insists on doing that. Galuf reluctantly admits that Xezat had no chance of survival and is not coming. On the plus side, we now have a submarine! Faris mentions that with a submarine, we may now be able to reach Ghido's sunken island. I park it next to our windrake and call it a night.
