Final Fantasy VI Advance - Ch. 36 - Cultists' Tower
This game has so many interesting scenarios in the back half. Sometimes, I just forget how awesome and creative it can be. This is definitely one of those scenarios: Cultists' Tower. When you're fighting in this tower, you can only use magic. No attacking, no Blitz, nothing but magic. So you might think it's really tough and it can be. A must have spell for this place is 'Reraise' (aka Life 3, the spell that revives you when you die). Some people think you absolutely need Stop, Reflect and Dispell; but Reraise is an absolute must-have. Also, just make it easy for yourself and your party and give them some Reflect Rings (Wall Rings). While I do have at least one powerful spell: Firaga and Sabin is close to learning Ultima; the amount of damage my magic does at this stage is not that strong. So, just use some Reflect Rings and let the monsters do a little damage to themselves.
Now, the Reflect Rings also serve a second purpose. Some of these monsters will have Reflect already casted on them (maybe they have Reflect Rings too), so really the only way to hurt them is to cast something on yourself and have it be reflected on to the monsters. So even with the Reflect Rings, you're still not on auto-pilot. There's also spells like Graviga, which are not reflected. By the nature of the spell itself, Graviga will never actually kill you, as it can only deal damage equal to a fraction of your current HP. But it can still be annoying.
In this tower is the Safety Bit. I missed it, but on the wall to the right of the chest is a switch which will reveal a door on the floor below. This will get you the 'Air Anchor', Edgar's last tool. Additionally there's the Genji Shield, Kagenui and the Force Armor. As you can guess, I'm skipping the dragon for now, even though this one is pretty weak at 18,500 HP. The dragon was a bit of a jerk, standing near the doorway and wouldn't let me leave. But I'll be back for it soon and I'll get the Air Anchor when I do.
After a couple fights, Terra learned Reraise and Sabin learned Ultima. So I had Mog put on the Molulu Charm and just headed straight for the top. The 'priceless treasure' is the 'Soul of Thamasa', a relic that lets you cast two spells in one turn. I immediately slapped it on Terra for the boss fight against the 'Magic Master'. Do not attack him at all, otherwise you'll trigger his Barrier Change. Instead, just focus on Terra casting Reraise on everyone. I was trying to time it so that I could kill him off by having Sabin cast Ultima, but I never got the timing right and he'd end up doing a Barrier Change. When Magic Master dies, he'll cast Ultima on the party, which does like 5,000 damage. Luckily, if you were able to cast Reraise on everyone, the party will be revived.
