Final Fantasy VI Advance - Ch. 37 - Ebot's Rock
Soooo close to being done. There's really only one more scenario after this before I get to the 'leftovers', so to speak. So Strago gets a little character development. Not much, but some other characters weren't even as lucky as he was here. For this scenario, you need to have Strago and Relm in your party. Relm is optional once you get to Ebot's Rock, but you definitely need Strago for this whole bit.
When you head back to Thamasa with Strago and Relm in tow, you'll find out that Strago's old friend, Gungho has been injured. He claims he was injured by Hidon, a monster that Strago and Gungho used to hunt as kids. Gungho asks Strago to avenge him by going to Ebot's Rock and defeating Hidon. Hidon is apparently a very tricky monsters to track and only Strago is capable of finding him. I remember I used to dread this scenario, because I misinterpreted the requirements and thought Strago had to go alone. But this is not the case.
Ebot's Rock is located just north of Thamasa. When you get there, a talking treasure chest will block your path. It's hungry and wants you to feed it coral before letting you pass. You'll see some switches on the floor. Stepping on them will send you to another randomized part of the dungeon with randomly generated chests containing coral. You need 22 pieces in order to satisfy the talking treasure chest. This really isn't difficult or challenging. The monsters here are kind of subpar and even my ragtag party (with my Yeti) was able to coast through without much trouble.
Once you get 22 coral pieces, just keep stepping on switches until you're back in the first room with the treasure chest. After he gets out of way, Hidon is just a bit behind him. Hidon is joined by a couple of Erubus's with each having an HP of about 3,500. One of them seems to be healed by anything, so I just ignored it. Hidon itself has about 25,000 HP, so just attacking and letting the Yeti do its thing will bring him down in a couple turns. Hidon has a special move called 'Grand Delta', which Strago can learn as a Lore. I tried twice, but I killed him before he was able to do it. It's not a huge loss and if this happens to you, check back at Thamasa periodically. Apparently, he will randomly come back and someone in the town will let you know.
