Final Fantasy VI Advance - Ch. 41 - Extra Espers
So in the GBA version of FF6, there are four Espers that weren't included in the original SNES version. The story goes that right before the Returners infiltrated the Magitek Research Facility, these four Espers escaped. Three out of the four are accessible now: Cactuar, Gilgamesh and Leviathan. The fourth, Diabolos, is located in the bonus dungeon called the 'Dragons' Den'. You have to first defeat all eight legendary dragons and receive the Stone Tablet. We haven't done that yet... so we'll be covering the first three extra Espers mentioned above.
CACTUAR
If you go to Maranda, you'll see a thief standing near the entrance off to the left. He has a blue headband, so that should be a clue that he's special. If you talk to him, he'll tell you that in the desert area nearby there are some interesting cactus creatures called 'cactuar's. If you defeat ten of them, a giant cactuar named 'Gigantuar' will show up. To make this part as quick as possible, I've increased the speed for all the tedious battles before Gigantuar. I've also included a handy little 'Cactuar Counter', so you can keep track of how many slain cactuars we've beaten.
Gigantuar is very strong and has very high evasion stats. It only has 30,000 HP, so casting Ultima a couple times should be enough to take it down. However, he has nasty counterattacks: Knockdown and '10,000 Needles'. When its HP reaches zero, it will perform 10,000 Needles ten times consecutively before actually dying. So you'll definitely need to cast 'Reraise' on ideally everyone in your party.
GILGAMESH
There's a reason why we did Cactuar first. This part requires that you have 500,000 Gil, which should be easy as each slain cactuar yields you 10,000 and the 'Slagworm' monster that's also in the area yields you 5,000, I believe. Once you have enough money, go to the auction house in Jidoor. Eventually, they should auction off a rare sword called the 'Excalipoor', which you can win for 500,000 Gil. The man standing outside the auction house will give you a clue, saying that someone's been running off with rare swords that are wagered at the Coliseum.
When you wager the Excalipoor, you'll face off against an 'Onion Dasher', who's not really much of a challenge. But afterwards, you'll see some dialogue from someone who wants to take your Excalipoor by force and your full party will go into a boss battle against Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh has more health than Gigantuar, sporting 38,000 HP. The battle starts off slow, but eventually he will cast Protect, Shell and Haste. That should be your cue to try and finish the battle ASAP. If you don't, Gilgamesh will start using 'Throw' and 'Jump', causing a lot of damage.
LEVIATHAN
Last but not least, there's Leviathan. Right when you enter South Figaro, you'll see a guy who tells you he saw a huge shadow of something underwater while out on the ocean. Go to the docks and ask to take the ship to Nikeah. The boat will pause on the way there and you'll be attacked by Leviathan. Leviathan has 32,000 HP and will counterattack just about anything with 'El Nino' and 'Tsunami'. It was almost game over for me because I setup three back-to-back Ultima's and the counters almost wiped me out. I was able to turn things around quickly though. It definitely helps if everyone knows 'Arise' and 'Curaga'.
