Released 4/4/1985, Formation Z was ported to the Famicom from Jaleco's arcade version. You play as a robot named Ixpel in the year 2701. You are trying to save the Earth from alien invaders and their superweapon. You can *ahem* transform into an aircraft that is capable of traveling in space. The game was called Aeroboto in the Western arcades. So, Ixpel can take on the aeroboto mode, or as it is otherwise known, formation Z.

The gameplay in Formation Z innovated on and blended up a number of genres. This is the first horizontal shooter released on the Famicom, but it also has an element of the early Space Invader styled shooters. You can seamlessly move between air and ground combat, but must collect fuel to stay in formation Z. The only reason I can think of why this very good game didn't make it to the NES is the intellectual property conflicts with Transformers' IP.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi-Score. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
