Released 4/9/1985, Soccer for Famicom would also appear on the Vs Arcade system and be released on the NES. The first in a long line of soccer games released on the Famicom/NES, the gameplay definitely leaves something to be desired. While not bad by any stretch of the imagination, the controls are rather clunky. This combined with bizarre AI behavior makes it a bit of a head scratcher.

That being said, I am determined to find something interesting to say about even the most mediocre games on the Famicom/NES. Let's start with the title. Some might find it off-putting to call football "soccer," but this is actually the correct term. Association football, shortened to "soccer," is distinct from rugby football, American football, and other variants.

Another interesting thing to note is this is the first game on the Famicom that lets you play as a dark skinned character. Oddly, there are cheerleaders (uncommon in soccer, extremely common in American football), but they are always white women no matter the skin tones of the players. What's more, they have pink eyes, which I guess is an attempt at eye-shadow? Or, is it an attempt to make a joke about hitting women? Sock-her... punny.

I find this game to be very Zen. Your opponents often set you up for success, e.g. corner kicks, and your teammates often set you up for failure, e. g. goal kicks. You can theoretically finish the game with zero points scored and zero penalty kicks made on both sides. The draw ends not with both sides cheering like fools, but rather enjoying equanimity after a game well-played.

I am considering a playthrough to be a draw or win on any difficulty. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
