Yie Ar Kung-Fu Famicom / NES CRT TV Playthrough asmr
3Released 4/22/1985, Yie Ar Kung-Fu for Famicom is a port of the arcade classic from Konami. Similar to the NES version, there are slight differences between the two like the character names. You play as Lee in the Famicom version, and the game is modeled after Hong Kong's Bruceploitation movies like Fist of Fury.
The Famicom version seems to be a direct homage to Bruce Lee's last film The Game of Death, which he never finished due to his fatal cerebral edema. In his vision of the film, his character battles to the top of a five story pagoda in hopes of saving his family. Each floor has a boss with a unique skill set, like use of a bo staff. Lee must adapt his fighting style to suit the particular match. Seeing him get manhandled by a Judo master is quite the treat! This core plot idea shapes the five unique fighters you face in Yie Ar Kung-Fu. You must adapt your strategy to the fighter you face.
This game set the standard for fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II, the latter of which pays it many homages. Tropes like special moves, chi fire balls, flying across the screen, and a health meter all started here. Though the opponent characters have been pared down to five from the arcade's eleven, the game loops and increases the difficulty while changing the stage colors.
The Mandarin Chinese can be translated into English as follows: yie=one; ar=two; kung-fu=acquired skill; lee=plum; wang=king; tao=path; chen=ancient; lang=lover; mu=wood.
I am considering a playthrough to be one loop on Levels 1 and 2. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
