Dangerous Driving (2019) - Every PC F1 Game
Dangerous Driving by Three Fields Entertainment, 2019.
Three Fields Entertainment (former Burnout developers) moved Dangerous Driving from the basic crashing modes of Danger Zone 1 & 2 (and Burnout Paradise before that), into more classic Burnout territory.
Currently still only available on Epic Games store, this one seems a bit less known than the Danger Zone titles. There are a range of cars and series in the game, but most boil down to racing as fast as you can (apart from the Chase HQ style Pursuit stages, where you smash racers off the road as fast as you can).
There are a few key driving features here, including drifting/getting close to regular road users/smashing rivals to increase boost, along with chaining boost for a speed increase on the Heatwave stages. Additionally, any cars you wreck will remain on the stage, adding to the hazards of multi-lap races!
The "Formula DD" cars represent the last championship in the game, so take a while to unlock. There are 4 variants, all of which look like 2010 racing cars, but each having a base colour scheme similar to real-life racing cars of the past: there's one similar to the mid-1990s Rothman Williams (although at some point in development they took away the dark blue/red/gold colour scheme seen in Danger Zone 1 & 2), along with a 1980s/90s Marlboro McLaren inspired car (Karlboro Shnell!), and a 1992 style Canon Williams (Camo!) colour scheme. All can have multiple colour combinations, some seen here.
The final car is a Fast & Furious 6 "flip car" inspired effort, covered in scaffolding, but it doesn't allow you to flip cars easily, it's actually pretty fragile!
Stages are based on real world roads (though not as real world as the real motorways seen in Danger Zone!), populated by a number of (frequently in the wrong place at the wrong time!) road users, who will cause you to crash out of control and inevitably end up behind the other cars. There's some harsh rubber banding (to keep rivals close) in some race categories, but not all, as you can end up 20 seconds behind in some races!
Overall, it feels like a high quality Unreal-engined budget game, which it largely is! You can tell it's budget because there's no music (apart from when the game loads); you're expected to connect a Spotify Premium account to get the music playing(!). Also, at the time of writing, the multiplayer doesn't work at all.
There was due to be a sequel in 2020, but things have gone rather quiet. I'll cover it, if it ever appears!
1. Race Start (Monza): 0:00 This is using the Survival mode, where you have to cover as much ground as possible before the timer runs out (or you crash!)
2. Spray Effects (Silverstone): 0:31 Every track features wet roads, though none cause handling difficulties or spray. This is the Face Off mode, where you try to beat one rival to unlock their car. No rubber banding here!
3. Tunnel & View (Monaco): 0:50 There's a bit of a tunnel here, but no city stages in the game. There are some stages that stick multiple stages together into one long stage, via a long tunnel (with noticeable frame drops in the tunnel as it switches over) but I didn't want to use one of those.
4. Wet Track (Spa-Francorchamps): 1:08 Again, no tracks are truly wet, though the road always looks post-rain storm! Here's a sweeping bit of a seaside track. Note that you can wallride quite a lot in this game, but it does slow you down. You'll only crash if you hit a wall at a harsh angle.
5. Pitstop (Interlagos): 1:26 There are no pitstops in the game, so I just park here for fun! This is the Takedown mode, where you smash as many cars as possible. It's one of the few times you see your car in "Critical Damage" mode, where one hit will finish you off... although you're still expected to crash into your rivals!
6. Huge Crash (Montreal): 1:38 I've pulled together a couple of crashes here, so you can enjoy the whacky physics/sparks-that-rotate-with-your-car! I also smash a few rivals for fun! As per Burnout you can activate an "Aftertouch" mode and "drive" your crashing car around, in order to take out any passing rivals. But it's over quickly, unlike the Danger Zone or Burnout Paradise titles before.
