A playthrough of Grandslam's 1993 license-based action game for the Sega Master System, The Flintstones.

The Flintstones on the Master System was only released in Europe and Brazil. It was based on the much older 1988 computer game by Grandslam and Teque for 8-bit computers.

The premise is interesting to this one. Fred wants to go bowling with Barney, so first he has to get Wilma on-board. He does this by painting an entire grey wall white while trying to deal with Pebbles, who mimicking her mother's bitchiness, escapes every opportunity she gets to draw on the freshly painted wall. Couldn't Fred have just put a raptor next to the playpen? If she acted up, she'd learn not to pretty quickly...

Anyways, once he's painted the wall, he has to rush to the bowling alley before it closes, and so stage 2 puts in you the foot-powered Flintstone car, jumping over all sorts of rocks and boulders in the road. If you hit any of them, the wheel goes flying off the car and you have to fix it.

When you finally get to the bowling alley, you play a game with Barney. If you beat him, you find out that Pebble has somehow gotten stuck at a cave/construction site (?) because her useless mother couldn't be bothered to keep an eye on her. Of course, the onus is then put on Fred to go rescue her.

For an 80s computer game, I'd say it's not half bad. It looks nice, the music is recognizable, and if you played PC games in the 80s, you'd be used to controls that don't make much sense and ear-piercing sound. Unfortunately, by 1993, things had moved on quite a bit. Someone didn't seem to realize that this game wasn't quite an enduring classic - but thankfully, Sega seemed to at least realize that poisoning the US and Japanese market with it would not help them.

It's a cute distraction for five minutes. Beyond that, you probably won't get much mileage out it. It is an interesting oddity, though, if you're a fan on The Flintstones.
