Tasmania Story was such an odd and unlikely release for the western market. It was based off of a popular movie that was never released in America, and features some aboriginal kid hunting for Tasmanian devils while protecting endangered species.
It plays like just like any number of single-screen 80s arcade type games (think Mappy or Rod Land), wherein you have to collect each of the items highlighted in the intro to each stage. To see the ending, you also have to find an endangered animal on each stage: these appear after stomping on enough Tasmanian Devils. After all ten stages, you win and get a fun informational tidbit.
I have to say, I really adore this game. It's ugly, it's short, and it's easy, but it always manages to grab me. Maybe it's the weirdly depressing tone to the presentation with its graphics and sound. Maybe it's just so simple in the right ways to be eminently playable. Who knows?
I do know that this is a title that people like to hate on (on the rare occasions that its existence is even recognized), but give it a bit of time. It'll definitely grow on you!
Last note - I think it's also kind of neat that this is the first game I ever recall playing where your main player character wasn't white. Of course, the Game Boy's extremely limited palette didn't help him look anymore more than a cariacature, but it was a thoughtful effort (even if the box art shows the kid, as a native islander, to be blond white kid).
