W-what's this witchcraft, a good exclusive RTS game on PS2!? On a console full of Japanese styled games, no less!? Yes... it's true folks, there was a Warcraft/Warhammer clone that played extremely well in the PS2 library.

Now this game isn't perfect or anything, and it's storyline is a bit cliched, essentially you're this goblin leader whose tribe had his lands raided by meteors. He then has to migrate into the forested territories of his brother who is under a possession spell by a wizard, eventually getting down to a dark lord trying to conquer and destroy all goblin leaders themselves. So it's your mission to use these little cute mischievous creatures to annihilate your brothers armies, and get close to the source of all this problem which is a temporal magic associated with (you guessed it...) the moon cycles.

So it's not unique in its storyline, but what it does so right is the characters are pretty fun and they all have their specific and cool uses throughout the experience. It's also quite fun, and I have to say I got addicted to this one very quickly. It has my dream scenario for strategy titles, that is a Warcraft styled game that takes out the scorched earth strategical gameplay, and adds a purely divide and conquer appeal in military strategy, like Command And Conquer. So if it makes any sense, the gameplay becomes more focused on proper military conducts, and not a create a base to create one specific unit that you're intending on raiding or left in the base to protect from a raid. And this is pretty awesome, really.

So Goblin Commander is a quite unique and fun game. But it also has some issues that bug me... for example, I like how you can conquer and control other goblin tribes with their magic on your side, and yes I know it's part of the storyline of the game, but how about if they had allowed you to maybe play shorter campaigns where you saw different scenarios from the other goblin chieftains, losing their power and getting controlled in a scorched earth scenario? That would've make it cool wouldn't it?

But alas the goblins feel great, and dare I say there isn't many goblin exclusive games, the other one I can think about is Gobliiins (the educational puzzle game) and Styx, which are also both very fun. There is just something cool about these little fellas, who in Norse and Celtic myths were the source of illnesses by corrupting the food, trying to incarnate off the ground to escape being hunted and defeated by other creatures, such as dragons (Norse people believed dragons came from worms who gestated too much under ground).

So it's pretty cool... and I highly recommend it. Put up your Zug Zug, and Mok'cha! and prepare for... well not Warcraft, but something pretty cool and close to it. Enjoy!
